Or are you trying to just use it on one when two are connected, and this issue occurs?

If the problem persists after installing the preview version and changing the tabs setting, can you try resetting your Moneydance preferences and see if that fixes the issue that you're seeing? To do this, you have to rename your config.dict file. If you're using Mac OS X, it should be located at one of these locations within your Home folder:

~/Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/config.dict

or:

~/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/config.dict

If you have any trouble finding your Home Library folder, open Finder, select Go -> Go to Folder -> from the menu bar, and copy and paste in:

~/Library

This should pull up your local Library folder.

Once you've found your config.dict file, close Moneydance and rename it (to something like config2.dict, for example), then open Moneydance again and it will appear as though you've just installed Moneydance for the first time, so you'll have to re-enter your license key and may have to locate and open your data set again. If you run into any problems, you can simply close Moneydance and rename the original config.dict file back to config.dict and open Moneydance again to restore your original settings.

If that doesn't work, please recreate the error where the program crashes. Then, before you relaunch Moneydance, can you send me your errlog.txt file? If you're using Mac OS X, it should be located at one of these locations within your Home folder:

~/Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/errlog.txt

or:

~/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/errlog.txt

If you have any trouble finding your Home Library folder, open Finder, select Go -> Go to Folder -> from the menu bar, and copy and paste in:

~/Library

This should pull up your local Library folder.

Thanks for the quick response and also thanks to Stuart B, for helpful info from a user!

OK, addressing some of your questions:

=> 1. I do like having both my external monitors in play when using Moneydance ($D), like when I need to change a category and want to see the other side of the transactions. My eyeballs don’t work with small print as well as they used to. I am not making a conscious decision to use both monitors when I launch Tools/Categories from the main screen, but I am utilizing most of my one 27” monitor to display the main screen and perhaps $D can recognize that and makes that decision for me?

=> 2. I have changed the tabs setting to “never” and downloaded, but not yet installed, the Preview version.

Before I do install the Preview version, can I rename it to something like "Moneydance 3036.app" and keep both that version and the 2021 version installed, but only use the preview version to test, at least initially? I do need to update my financial data in the meantime and I do not want to kill $D 2021 in the process of trying to fix this issue.

Also let me mention that when Apple first released Big Sur, my Macbook Pro model was the oldest model Apple said could run Big Sur. However, when I tried to upgrade to Big Sur, Apple would not present the upgrade file - the message was I was already running the latest current version that I could; so I stuck with Catalina. I did chat with Apple Tech support and they said I should be able to upgrade, but did not have any suggestions on what to do about not being able to see the Big Sur upgrade. About 3-4 months later, Software Update notified me I should upgrade my OS to Big Sur and sure enough, the upgrade file was presented and I installed it. I plan to get a new Macbook Pro as soon as one comes out with Apple silicon, but that is then and this is now. Sigh.

I will send you a new error log if I still have a problem after I try the solutions you suggest. Again, many thanks for the help. Cheers,

Well, I didn’t wait for your OK to install the new preview version. It's installed and it opened successfully on my Macbook Pro appearing as normal on one of my external monitors. When I opened Tools/Categories it opened successfully on the other external monitor. So, what is your suggestion to move forward from this point? Can I use the 3036 preview version to update my financials or should I wait until the 3036 preview or a later version is released and still work with the released version 2021?

Thanks for the help and cheers,

The multi-monitor issue is a problem with the version of Java included in Build 2006 of Moneydance, which is the current stable build. This was resolved in a latter version of Java that was included in a slightly later build of Moneydance, however preview build 3036 is the only version available from the company - there is no archive of preview releases, hence there is really no choice other than the preview build you have.

The issue with tabs that requires you to change that setting at this stage does not have a fix in any version at the moment.

So yes you should use preview build 3036 to update your financials.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/490749262021-03-08T01:38:35Z2021-03-08T01:38:35ZMoneydance crashes on MacOS 11.2.2 running on Macbook Pro with two external monitors

I'm glad to hear the preview version seems to have sorted this issue out! Yes, I agree, you should just use 3036 moving forward.
