Unlike some other software MD is a fully double entry bookkeeping system. That means for each transaction there are two ends. Something comes from somewhere and ends up somewhere.

If you spend money on food then the money comes out of your debit card and goes into the food category. Note in this way categories and accounts are very very similar. If money comes from an account that is "outside MD" then that is simply a category such as "Gifts" for example.

You can make that Category be anything you want. So I assume you are creating a transaction manually in an investment account. The matching source (or sink) of funds will be the default category/account for the Investment Account. You can set that default in the account settings.

So in the investment account, you get a gift of funds, then just put in XFR with a description and a category of "Gift" and the amount. There is no "ghost" item but it is sort of weird if the default category for an account is the same account, then all the transactions are really zero events.

If the Vanguard downloads the data it is the same. The "O" does not indicate a bank transaction but a reconciled downloaded transaction. In this case you will have a XFR to the investment account from a category you can call "checking". Then later it will have a buy transaction as it purchases the default money market or the specified purchase.

I don;t know how you can have a blank default category unless you have created a blank category which is probably not a good think to have.

I understand everything you said. These are buy transactions, by the way directly downloaded from Vanguard. Yes, I’ve been getting regular debits from my “cash balance” which I’ve ignored. What I don’t understand why this is the first time this has happened, since I’ve been making purchases in this account.

As for the category, when I went to the category list, each entry had a small diamond in the left column. The top entry was just the diamond and no description. I did not set it up this way… perhaps something got corrupted.

We’ll see what happens next month.

I appreciate your response.

wa1oui
