Investment downloads don't match my records

Hi -- I'm new to MD2010 from quicken. I'm using a Mac OS X 10.5.6

I've tried setting up downloads from brokerage accounts like Fidelity and Vanguard. It seems to go through as expected. However, not all of the securities get downloaded and not all of the balances are right. MD has clearly connected successfully -- the securities all have transactions within the last 30 days due to the end-of-the-year dividends. The account numbers match. These are common investment sites and I don't see a pile of complaints so I must be doing something wrong in the set up.

For example, in my Vanguard account, each security gets its own account number. I entered one account number expecting MD2010 to download the transactions for that fund. Instead, it downloaded a partial report from another fund with another account number... I figured it was a Vanguard problem but then I had similar problems with Fidelity. In that case, there is just one account number. However, not all funds (and not all shares) of each fund are downloaded. No error messages so I have no idea.

Are you sure you have this set up correctly? You said "each security gets its own account number." Securities (funds) should have stock or ticker symbols and accounts (like IRA) should have acct numbers. So the acct number for your IRA account would show the securities within that acct (and each security would have it's own ticker symbol). Transactions would then show up in the account for all securities held within that account.

I download from Janus and Fidelity without any problem, so I don't think it has to do with their sites.

My T. Rowe Price account has a different number for each fund. My Fidelity account has one account number and several funds. I'm sure I've set something up wrong because I don't see widespread complaints about this. I am trying to switch from Quicken (for windows, running in a virtual window) but it downloads everything w/o any problem. In Quicken's case, you just give the user ID/Password/Account and it gets everything. Do I have to specify the funds in advance?

    Let me give an example.
I have an account with Fidelity with one general account number, one user id and password.

I thought, perhaps it needed the securities... so I went and added each security to money dance (name, ticker symbol).

I created an investment account called "Fidelity Brokerage."

I set it up for online banking -- name Fidelity Brokerage, Bank name - chose Fidelity Investments from the drop down list. Added user info.

I added the securities (ticker symbols, names) to Fidelity Brokerage (I never did this before but thought it might help it).

    I chose download Fidelity Brokerage.

MD2010 went through each security and asked me to match it to one that I previously entered -- I did that.

It did the download w/o error message.

It had amounts for each fund. The only problem, is that except for one fund, all the number of shares was wrong (c/w with a window open in my browser showing the current values). One number of shares was actually a negative number! They were bascially random numbers. The share price was listed as 1 for all so no share prices were even downloaded.

In the past, I just set up the brokerage account as above and assumed that on the first download, it would get the included securities, ticker symbols, values. I found that it got some, but not all, and the values were fairly random.

I have no idea what I am doing wrong -- any help would be appreciated. I'd love to switch to MD but... this is unworkable. Since others aren't having problems and this is with several different brokerages, it must be something that I am doing...

I believe MD only downloads the transactions and not the underlying value/shares in the account. I think you need to put that in manually. I'm not totally up to date on this so hopefully someone else can add some insight.

I've been thinking about this and I feel like the problem lies in the fact that MD only downloads transactions and so you're missing the initial purchase and additional reinvestments that have occurred over time. Here's what I'd suggest:

    1. As I stated earlier, I think you need to have the base number of shares for each security manually entered into MD before the download (unless these are new accounts which have the beginning purchases of each fund and so will be be downloaded). MD only downloads transactions so if the initial purchase of the fund isn't in the download you won't be getting the entire # of shares you own. So you need to either import the base information from your Quicken account or manually enter it. You will want the total # of shares and a stock price entered.
    2. Once you have the base info in, download from Fidelity making sure that you have the correct dates so that you capture all the transactions between the date of your base and everything afterwards. So, if your last manual/import from Quicken entry is 12/31/09 then you want to make sure you download from that date forward.

I think this should get your account set. I would suggest trying with just 1 account to see if it works correctly.

I tried this with one account -- this looks like it may work -- I'll have to wait to see what happens with the next transaction.

So my checking account will be the same... I have to figure out what the balance currently should be (taking into account any deposits/checks out there and anything it downloads and add a correct starting balance).

    Thanks for your help!

    Exactly!

Also, did you download the Stock Quote Synchronizer and the Stock/Forex Quotes Auto Synchronizer extensions? If not, take a look at them. One automatically updates every stock symbol you have in your portfolio when you open MD and the other allows you to manually get most recent quotes.

    Good luck.

    Bhawthorne,
Sorry to be late in replying, are you asking how to set up the initial balances on an investment account containing securities, for which you would select that account, go to Account->edit accounts menu and fill in the initial balance ledger; or are you asking how to set the initial prices of securities you've purchased?
