Data file location

I upgraded to MD 2012 and moved my data file to a new location as instructed in the Knowledge Base. Moneydance does not, however remember where the new file is. Each time I open the program it acts as if it's the first time the program has been opened.

Forgot to say this is on a Windows Vista machine.

    Hi Sheri,
I am sorry to hear you are having trouble. Can you clarify whether you are seeing the welcome screen when you open, if so is your file listed in the right side, and do you get asked to re-enter your registration key.
    Sincerely,
    Jon Hoover, Moneydance Support

Thanks Jon. I am seeing the welcome screen and my files are not listed on the right side. I am not asked to re-enter my registration key.

    Hi Sherri,
On the welcome screen there should be a 3 digit build number listed, could you check to see if you have the latest preview version, 846? Some of the earlier versions of 2012 occasionally had issues with remembering file locations and that may be the cause. If you don't have the latest could you please try downloading it from here: http://infinitekind.com/preview
    Sorry for the inconvenience.
    Thanks.

More info: I put the data file back in the default location to see how the program behaves, and now when I open Moneydance, I get the "Getting Started With Moneydance" screen but my data file does appear on the right.

Is this what is supposed to happen or is it supposed to automatically open the program with my data file.

    Hi Sheri,
If I had to guess this may have to do with an incompatibility of the user account you may be using to run the program and the file 'permissions' for the configuration file that stores your file locations.
Sometimes this happens because you install the program with one user account and then run it under another and sometimes it happens because of some sort of dysfunction in Windows Vista.
What we will need to do is make sure the user account that you are using has permission to write to the file 'config.dict' where your list of moved files is kept.
This file is located in C:\Documents and Settings<username>.moneydance.
Please note the dot before the moneydance folder name. This means the folder is hidden so be sure to once you are in your 'username' folder to tell your file browser to show hidden folders.
With in this folder you will see a file called config.dict.
    1. Right-click the file, click Properties, and then click the Security tab.
    2. Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
    3. Click Edit, and then do one of the following:
    · To change the owner to a user or group that is not listed, click Other users and groups and, in Enter the object name to select (examples), type the name of the user or group, and then click OK. · To change the owner to a user or group that is listed, in the Change owner to box, click the new owner. 4. If you want to take ownership of the contents of the folder, select the Replace owner on sub containers and objects check box. 5. Click OK, and then click Yes when you receive the following message:

You do not have permission to read the contents of directory folder name. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control?
All permissions will be replaced if you click Yes.

Note folder name is the name of the folder that you want to take ownership of.
    6. Click OK, and then reapply the permissions and security settings that you want for the folder and its contents.

I don't have windows vista so that list of six steps is from here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-file...

Please let me know if you need me to clarify any of this and if it does or doesn't address the issue.
    Sincerely,

    Hi Sheri / Jon,

One slight change to the instructions...

The .moneydance folder in Vista should be in C:\Users\<username>\.moneydance
C:\Documents and Settings is the folder heirarchy for Windows XP.

For a quick shortcut to the .moneydance folder, click the Start button then clcik on your username at the top of the right-hand column of the Start menu.
An Explorer window will open and the .moneydance folder should be the very first folder listed.

Well it's working with a combination of both of our brains.

I had all the permissions I needed for the config.dict file so that wasn't the problem. You did, however, get me to thinking about what might be in that file and was that the problem. I deleted that file, moved my data folder to where I wanted it and opened Moneydance. I initially got the "Getting Started with Moneydance" screen and my file was not listed in the right pane. I pointed the program to my data, closed the program, re-opened and it opened up my data file without splash screens!

    Thanks for your help!
