Moneydance Painfully Slow on Mac
Longtime user. Since upgrading to version 2021.1 on a 2019 iMac running Big Sur 11.4, every simple operation is painfully, brutally, impossibly S-L-O-W. How slow? Create an entry and hit Return and wait a full 8-10 seconds for the entry to register. THAT slow. When I absolutely can't put off updating my books any longer, I'll work this way for about a half hour and all of sudden, it'll kick in and work just fine for hours. Until the next time I open the application - then it crawls along for another 30 minutes or an hour.
Quitting and restarting the application does no good; neither does restarting the Mac; neither did re-installing the app. What's causing this and how do I fix it? it's driving me absolutely nuts.

Are you using Sync? Dropbox folders or Dropbox Connection?
How large is your dataset. Install Toolbox and click the diagnose objects and dataset button; post that here.
Where is your dataset? Local drive, or external drive? What type?
Post your console err log.txt file here

My needs are very simple. I don't sync to anything, don't use any apps. I balance my home checking account and keep track of credit cards. My dataset as to be miniscule. It's stored locally and backed up on an external drive via TimeMachine along with the rest of the Mac. The docs and data are also backed up to iCloud.
I have no clue what my "console err log.txt file" is.

This is all way above my head. Thank you, Stuart, but I'm really trying to access the support I paid for when I bought the application and years of upgrades and this seems to be the only way to do it. Everything worked flawlessly for me until the latest upgrade.

You're not kidding... Your dataset is tiny. Should be no problem.. Let's see the console output. I suspect you may have a Machine/memory issue.... If you look at Mac Activity Monitor what does it report for Moneydance Memory usage and CPU usage when the problem occurs?

I'm not seeing any spikes in the Activity Monitor. But I'm not sure what I'm looking for.

OK, what happens if you create a new data set and test MD using that... Is that slow too?

New test file worked at normal speed. I re-opened my original file and now it runs at normal speed too. I don't know it this has anything to do with the test file. most of the time, it will "find its speed" after 30 minutes or so.

Finished my entries, closed the app. Opened it back up and it immediately ran at normal speed. Maybe creating the new file helped point it to its data. I'll try it again tomorrow. Thank you so much for all your help, Stuart. You're a mensch.

👍 I somehow doubt the new file thing fixed the issue. When/if the issue reappears look at Activity Monitor again…..

Zombie thread. But it's happening again and nothing is fixing it. Tried the new file trick. no luck. Same as before. Everything is snappy until I hit return on any new entry. I have to wait 5 or 6 seconds. Version 2023.3. Mac M2 Mini 8GB RAM

Creating a new Moneydance file will not do anything, that was a check point to see if the problem was a general one or related to the specific data set.
I would suggest you start Moneydance, open the Moneydance console. Use the software until the problem appears, then copy the console output and post it here and lets see if that sheds any light.
BTW are you syncing to any other device and if so what method are you using, you should also state what version of macOS you have. O/S version along with the Moneydance version is core information for many problems.
