Customising MD10
I want to add categories for the kind of transaction I'm entering.
Additional desirable categories would include
direct debit
debit card
standing order
All I can find is
ckcard (check card?) and
Cheque.
Can additional categories be added to this field (see attached screenshot).

Yes, but these aren't categories. (Categories are special types of accounts, for expenses and income.) These are called "check # items", I guess. With your home page open ("My Finances"), use the menu Account > Edit Account to change the list.
