does deleting a category affect an archive?

I have several categories that I no longer use (e.g. bathroom renovations that are now finished, a food:groceries category that we have changed to just groceries, etc). In the interests of making the category list smaller, I would like to delete the old categories for this year and into the future. I have archived all my transactions at the end of each year. If I should want to open one of the archived files to get some data, would the old categories still be there? (I wouldn't want them deleted in the previous year's files because I may need that data sometime - just in this years, from now on.) And once I go back to this year's files, would the category still be gone? (I hope that I am clear.)

Does the same thing apply to tags? We use tags to keep track of each vacation's expenses, or sometimes one aspect of a vacation's expenses, like cost of Motorhome gas. If we eliminate the tags in this year's files, will they still be there if we should open one of the archives?

Thanks for your help
Nancy

    Nancy,

Archived files and current files are kept separate. It's fine to delete categories and tags, they'll still be there in your archives.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance, and thank you for your interest in Moneydance.
