Followed all the guidance I found on the site, and still no luck. I now have noticed that when I try and disable online banking with my accounts to reset, it doesn't disable. I have a high number of transactions each month in these accounts and I definitely don't want to have to manually enter these. I also went back to previous version of MD (3095 and 4043) and no luck. Rebooted as well. Currently on MacBook Pro running Big Sur 11.6.

timfetnertag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494166782021-10-02T17:35:18Z2021-10-02T17:35:18ZUnable to Download Transactions From Schwab

The disable button is broken. I’ve already reported this to Sean. You can always disable in 3095 and then go back to 4045.

Also toolbox preview from my site can delete banking profiles in MD2022.

You might want to check that Schwab isn’t down or something first though.

Dear Scott Davis,

Thank you for contacting Schwab! I hope this reply finds you well!

In regards to your inquiry, yes, Schwab did recently remove access for certain third party vendors, including MoneyDance. Schwab did not provide notice to clients, but instead notified the third party vendors of the removal of access. MoneyDance would have been responsible for providing notifications to clients utilizing the service.

Schwab removed access to third parties that did not agree to terms and conditions set forth by Schwab. Schwab has been attempting to obtain written agreement from MoneyDance (along with select third party vendors) since October 2020.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Additionally, we appreciate your feedback regarding QFX compatibility. The feedback we receive from clients is invaluable as we work towards attaining the high standards we have set. I will pass along this feedback to our developers.

If you have any further questions regarding third party access, please contact our Help Desk team. Our technical support team can be reached at 800-433-9196, Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm ET, and on Saturdays/Sundays from 10:00 am to 7:30 pm ET.

We were in contact with Schwab in October 2020 last year (and subsequently) regarding our application to use their FDX interface. However our application was rejected because we don't have a corporate presence located in the USA. They indicated that being located in the USA was a requirement and suggested that we use an aggregator. So, we're now using an aggregator (Plaid) with the Moneydance+ service to which we'll be adding investment download support soon.

Thanks,

I don't have Schwab-specific details (or even investment support) available just yet, but the general transaction download service will be available within a few days as part of Moneydance 2022. I will also be writing up a document about how it works and posting that here and possibly on the blog.

To keep updated about the release of Moneydance 2022 in general, we'll be announcing it in a bunch of places and would love everyone's help in spreading the word. Our outlets will mainly be:

Our company blog: https://infinitekind.com/blog

Twitter https://twitter.com/moneydance

Our newsletter (sign up at the bottom of pages such as https://infinitekind.com/download)

And of course installing the Updater extension in Moneydance will alert you when the new version is ready

I stopped there and didn't go any further.

So, if I'm understanding things correctly, to get downloads working again in Moneydance, I need to give my username and password to someone I've never heard of (Plaid), so they can log into my Schwab account, on my behalf and send me my own list of transactions back to me.

Then next week, when I open Moneydance again and click download, they (Plaid) presumably having saved my username, password and probably some transaction info somewhere, will log in as me again and get my new transactions.

Hey, I'm all for being lazy, but this beyond the pale.

Am I missing something here? Couldn't they at least use a limited-scoped token of some sort? As is, this is an institutionalized man-in-the-middle attack.

I just had a CC (from another bank, not Schwab) cancelled because of fraudulent activity. This has been happening quite regularly for years now and though they never tell me how my CC #s get leaked, I know it's because most organizations (vendors, banks, etc.) are really bad at securing their data. CC companies know this and structure their business models so they are quick at detecting fraud and reversing charges that I question.

I can't reasonably expect Schwab and/or Plaid being that responsive to me if I find my accounts drained after I've literally given out my username and password to an unknown website.

Please tell me there's another way to get this done.

Keith Beattietag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494166782021-10-14T07:58:30Z2021-10-14T07:58:30ZUnable to Download Transactions From Schwab

FYI - In the UK we have OpenBanking and as a result with MD+ and Plaid, you actually logon to the Bank's own page and Plaid never gets your userid/password....
Sean - with all due respect, Moneydance+ is not an option for many of us who prefer not to give our login information to a third party. Why not start a US subsidiary and use that as an address for Schwab? Alternatively, how about an option to import financial transactions from a csv file (those ARE available from Schwab). This is clearly not as good as just fixing the problem, but it is a reasonable stopgap. I LOVE moneydance and have recommended it to many family and clients (I work in IT support), but unless this is fixed somehow, I will be forced to move to another program. I'd hate to do that, but unfortunately I guess I will have to...

johnsonwtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494166782021-10-14T14:14:59Z2021-10-14T14:14:59ZUnable to Download Transactions From Schwab

@johnsonw, I understand and to some extent agree with you about giving information to a 3rd party. This was one of the reasons I chose MD years ago. BUT (and you knew that was coming) creating a US subsidiary is a lot of work and maintenance and probably not good business decision for IK.

CSV files do NOT include enough data to reliably parse out investment transactions. They vary by provider etc.

The best solution (AFAICT) is that us Schwab clients have more leverage with Schwab than Sean does. We should ask Schwab to remove their restriction on foreign aggregators in this world of globalization. They allow foreign accounts?

sthtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494166782021-10-14T14:39:36Z2021-10-14T14:39:36ZUnable to Download Transactions From Schwab

OK. I understand this is a business decision for IK. I don't like it, but it is what it is. Relative to a csv importer into investment accounts, I will beg to differ from you as described below. As individual customers each of us has little or no leverage with Schwab so although we can ask, it is highly unlikely Schwab will change based upon requests from the few of us this impacts.

For others like me who do not wish to enroll in MD+, but do want to maintain some ability to import Schwab data, I have implemented a work-around that although less than ideal, is less work than manually entering Schwab transactions. I purchased a CSV-->OFX translater from a company called ProperSoft (I have no relationship with them) called Transactions Essential for $39.99. Downloading transactions from Schwab as a CSV file, and running it through this program produced an OFX file that imports successfully into MD, although the type of "action" had to be adjusted. Not perfect, but better than nothing. It will work for now until I can find another locally installed program that restores the functionality that MD used to have...
I am sad to have to leave MD. It was great until it got crippled by business decisions by Schwab and IK. :-(

johnsonwtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494166782021-10-14T14:43:27Z2021-10-14T14:43:28ZUnable to Download Transactions From Schwab

I think MD+ is great. then you should.

Mason Atkinsontag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494166782021-10-14T15:37:54Z2021-10-14T15:37:54ZUnable to Download Transactions From Schwab

Mason - I am happy it works for you. Yes, I have read Sean's post. But, I have used aggregators before, and my experience was they do not always continue to work as banks/firms change. They require constant tweaking. Plus, there are security concerns of putting all your account information in one place. No organization is safe from hackers so I prefer not to put all my eggs in one basket so to speak. Plus, there is a pretty big difference between a company like Schwab that holds over 6 trillion dollars in customer money, and a start-up like Plaid that holds no money and is just an intermediary. I made the decision some time ago not to use aggregators for these reasons. Plus, now in MD I have to pay for the privilege of less security and potentially lots of tweaking to boot. It works for you - great - but not for me. To each his own.

johnsonwtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494166782021-10-14T17:54:20Z2021-10-14T17:54:20ZUnable to Download Transactions From Schwab

@johnsonw, not to belabor the point and you make very valid points. The problem with the constant tweaking is that it is more than Sean can keep up with. Sean has been doing this constant tweaking that you dislike for free as part of the MD service. BUT, this is no longer feasible.

So aggregator or no, you still had this constant tweaking. However Schwab is no longer supporting this. If CSV works for you, then great. However, I would think if Schwab could allow downloads of CSV to you personally, then THEY could format it as an OFX file as well. Again the company in control of this is Schwab not IK.

sthtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494166782021-10-15T01:44:01Z2021-10-15T01:44:01ZUnable to Download Transactions From Schwab

I think people may need to wait for the dust to settle a little and with Schwab in particular. The sense I have is that Schwab are moving towards using FDX.

My reading of FDX is that is works somewhat like Open banking in that a token is provided that allows the transaction information to be downloaded by or through the intermediate (aggregator) you have selected. They do not have your username/password combination at any time.

Naturally you can rescind this approval at any time.

This approach removes the barrier of having to provide usernames/passwords to third parties which is the largest security problem.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494166782021-10-15T11:19:59Z2021-10-15T11:19:59ZUnable to Download Transactions From Schwab

Thank you dwg for that insight into FDX. I agree with you - patience is warranted as the financial industry continues to evolve its methods and security related to data sharing. Since I have a work-around for importing Schwab data into MD (see above), I will see what happens in the coming months.

johnsonwtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494166782021-10-27T13:40:35Z2021-10-27T13:40:35ZUnable to Download Transactions From Schwab

My Schwab downloads through Schwab is working with one problem. Schwab downloads only the completed transactions but gives the balance based on both completed and pending transactions. So reconciles don't reconcile.

Is there some option that I should be setting?

andrea_ktag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494166782021-11-04T22:30:33Z2021-11-04T22:30:35ZUnable to Download Transactions From Schwab

Are the Schwab downloads working with 2 factor authentication? I had to use the 2FA token code to connect through Moneydance+, and then it failed downloads but told me it was due to 2FA, which I am not willing to turn off. I cancelled Moneydance+ for now. I did query 'Moneydance thru Plaid' which put me in contact with a virtual assistant, to no avail.

jrjrtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494166782021-11-04T22:46:22Z2021-11-04T22:46:22ZUnable to Download Transactions From Schwab

just a user

can you recognize devices (yours) with 2FA and Schwab? That might be something to pursue, as you won't always have to get a token code for a recognized device?

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494166782021-11-04T23:19:23Z2021-11-04T23:19:25ZUnable to Download Transactions From Schwab

dtd...

not sure I understand the question. When I originally tried to register a Schwab username and pw, failed. Then I registered the pw with a token number appended, and was able to complete the registration, but downloads did not work. But I may have been too hasty; yesterday 'Setup Moneydance+' showed the 2 accounts (checking and investing) I registered with no name, and after I cancelled Moneydance+, it would not let me disconnect them. Today, it was properly identified as Schwab, and I was able to disconnect them. (I also changed both my passwords, since the process seemed so flakey.) Possibly if I waited a day, it would have worked?

jrjrtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494166782021-11-06T20:13:56Z2021-11-06T20:13:56ZUnable to Download Transactions From Schwab

jrjr - don't know, as I haven't tested MD+ yet, but I've often found (Awardwallet, for example) that there are ways to workaround 2FA.

1) One is turn off 2FA only for the setup process, then turn it back on.
2) One is to say 2FA except with recognized devices (and thus Plaid can become a "recognized device".

Now the token concept may make this more problematic. I probably should just start testing it even though I've been waiting for Schwab investment accounts to work.

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494166782021-11-06T20:17:45Z2021-11-06T20:17:45ZUnable to Download Transactions From Schwab

@johnsonw - Thanks for your mention of Propersoft Transactions Essential. I'm also looking for a way to use CSV with Schwab, given that's the only option now (If I can get this to work, I won't need MD+)

Questions: Are you using this only for Schwab Banking or Credit Card, or are you also using this for your investments/stocks accounts? In reading the overview for Transactions Essential, it seems to say "only banking/cc".

If you do have this working for investment accounts, you mention having to fix "action", but what about stock symbols, quantity of sale, and so on?

Thanks for describing how you are making this work as an interim solution.

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494166782021-11-07T00:30:47Z2021-11-07T00:30:54ZUnable to Download Transactions From Schwab

I have only used Propersoft Transactions for importing investment accounts. It works, but some transactions do require small changes, like dividends are listed as transfers and such. That said, I have only done imports once or twice so I really can't speak to how reliable or successful it will be in the long run.

johnsonwtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494166782021-11-07T00:48:24Z2021-11-07T00:48:24ZUnable to Download Transactions From Schwab

So it does convert Stock Symbols and Quantity of Sale (which wouldn't be in a bank or cc transaction)?

Thanks for your experience.

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494166782021-11-07T11:36:28Z2021-11-07T11:36:36ZUnable to Download Transactions From Schwab

I just did another import from csv->qif uisng ProperSoft transactions into a Schwab investment account. This time, month and day were reversed in transactions, and amounts were negative instead of positive, It did get the proper symbols. I had no buys or sells so don't know about number of shares. It is quite possible that I did not set the parameters correctly in the program, which is why I had these issues this time, not last. Or, maybe it is better to do csv->ofx. Lots of ways to play around to see if it will work for your particular situation. All in all, I cannot give this program or approach a complete thumbs-up. So far for me, it works sort-of, but it is a PITA. Since I am not a heavy trader in my Schwab accounts, I may just enter the data manually. YMMV.

johnsonw
