When installing Moneydance, one of the screens that opens during installation asks what file types you want to associate with Moneydance. One of the file types is CSV.

To resolve the matter, open the 'Settings' app in Windows 10.
Click on the 'Apps' section.
On the left side column, select 'Default apps'.
Scroll down to the bottom of the 'Default apps' page.
Click on the link to 'Choose default apps by file type'.
In the resulting list scroll down to .csv and click on the associated program (Moneydance) and change it back to your spreadsheet program.

In the future, if / when updating / upgrading Moneydance pay particular attention to the installation screens that popup. One of them will provide you the opportunity to de-select .csv files from being associated to Moneydance.

Thanks for getting back to me. I have one more question. (updating program as I type here)

When I do this, when I upload my financial files from banks, will I have to re-set the file types

Sherry

gosherry1tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494320602021-10-12T20:34:07Z2021-10-12T20:34:07ZTechnical problem: YOUR S/W HAS HIJACKED MY COMPUTERS

Hi Sherry,

No. That should not be necessary as you will not be opening the .csv files from your bank, you will simply be importing them.

If you have several different banks that you import CSV files from, you may want to take a look at the CSV Importer extension. The CSV Importer allows you save the various settings that may be needed for importing from different banks.

-Kevin N. (not a member of MD support)

-Kevin N.tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494320602021-10-12T20:36:59Z2021-10-12T20:36:59ZTechnical problem: YOUR S/W HAS HIJACKED MY COMPUTERS

Kevin,

Further, I don’t see default apps on the left side. However, there is applications in the right/middle of the page, which I assume is the same thing. There are 3 options for CSV files and it was set to save file. I changed it to Always ask, but this does not sound like what you are saying here.

Also, when d/l’ing financial files if I don’t use CSV, what do I use? I have a couple of financial institutions and bank cards and this is what I have had to use

Sherry

gosherry1tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494320602021-10-12T20:44:15Z2021-10-12T20:44:15ZTechnical problem: YOUR S/W HAS HIJACKED MY COMPUTERS

Hi Sherry,

Try this instead of using the 'Settings' app...

Right-click on the CSV file in question.
From the resulting context menu, select 'Open with...'

Doing so will either open a new window OR will open a pop-out menu where you can select 'Choose another app'.

In the new window you can select the desired program to associate with CSV files.

Be sure to tick the checkbox to 'Always use this app to open .csv files'.

Moneydance can import OFX, OFC, QFX and QIF files into all accounts. It can import CSV and TXT files into credit card and bank accounts only (no investment accounts)

Look carefully through the context menu that opens when you right-click on the .csv file.

You should see an 'Open with...' option in the resulting menu.

Here is a screenshot of what the right-click context menu should look like.

-Kevin N. (not a member of MD support)

-Kevin N.tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494320602021-10-12T21:21:27Z2021-10-12T21:21:31ZTechnical problem: YOUR S/W HAS HIJACKED MY COMPUTERS

Kevin,

I know what it should look like, it just does not. I will send you a shot of what it does look like – there is precious little there. actually, I managed to corrupt one file by trying to change the extension, but the important one is intact I thought I had the default to adobe fixed, but apparently not (I had to use my phone to get it as it would not keep the ‘save’ menu open for a screen shot):

But, if you can open it as a jpg which it is, great. I HAVE to run some errands that have to be done this evening. I will get back to you on this, or someone else.

I really appreciate your help!

It seemed that CSV was the only option I had. But, then I could have misunderstood it.

Try this...

From the Windows taskbar, click the 'Search' icon and type in "associate". (without the quotation marks)

One of the results should be 'Choose a default app for each type of file'.

Click on that and change the program associated with .csv files.

One other thing to try that I've come across...
