When you say ‘restored backup’, what do you mean? MD/File/Restore backup, or some other method? Ie did you restore from a xxx.moneydancearchive file?

Do you have a recent, valid, xxx.moneydancearchive file?

Who or what are you syncing with and is that sync copy ok?

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494768992021-11-08T09:28:52Z2021-11-08T09:28:52ZSync between Windows based computers

Stuart;
Thank for responding. I initially created the “restored” dataset by running the restore archive within MD.

However at one point when getting frustrated with the whole process I may well have “restored” the dataset by copying the archive dataset to the MD Document folder and renaming it.

Does MD “do other things” to the dataset when restoring it.

I take it you’re basing your assessment of “buggered” based on things you are seeing in the error log I attached?

Do you mean you renamed xxx.moneydancearchive to xxx.moneydance? That would screw it up. The archive is a recursive zip of a folder with 100s of files.

Step 1. Do File/Restore Backup using a good/recent xxx.moneydancearchive file. Leave sync off. Check it appears ok. Send new log so we can check it.

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494768992021-11-08T10:39:37Z2021-11-08T10:39:40ZSync between Windows based computers

Stuart

Whilst it doesn’t explain my initial sync problem it may certainly explain issues I’ve experienced down the track.

Pardon my ignorance but where is the error log on the dataset when you haven’t attempted to sync the file. The only place I’ve seen such a file is in the sync folder.

Regards

This is the console errlog.txt file.

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494768992021-11-08T10:50:30Z2021-11-08T10:50:30ZSync between Windows based computers

As Stuart said your log looks horrible and as indicated the first step is to get a good data set from a backup before you go any further. Without a solid data set you cannot go any further, it just digs a bigger hole.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494768992021-11-08T10:55:24Z2021-11-08T10:55:24ZSync between Windows based computers

The error log is in the same place irrespective of syncing, On Windows that means in the .moneydance folder under your login. The console log is a more detailed view of what ends up the the error log.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494768992021-11-08T10:56:32Z2021-11-08T10:56:34ZSync between Windows based computers

Stuart;

Thanks for your help, it’s greatly appreciated. Been using MD for a while after swapping Reckon Personal (Quicken) for it but hadn’t fiddled much with Sync because it had appeared to work up until recently.

I’ve restored what I believe is a good archive copy from within MD.

I have attached the console file. To my inexperienced eye the file does not contain anything untoward but please let me know.

Thanks and regards

1/ please verify that your net worth and all reports/values are ok?

2/ restart MD again and post yet another console log. I want it clean before we progress.

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494768992021-11-08T11:32:36Z2021-11-08T11:32:39ZSync between Windows based computers

Stuart;

It says: loading dataset: C:\Users\Robert Worthington.moneydance\Documents\1fe10035-f747-4b4b-a6d5-fe39caf8c50e.tempmoneydance

Then references: WORTHINGTON 2016-Onwards (d2706d87-e606-4b10-97b7-deb9a13da5f5

Then loading dataset: C:\Users\Robert Worthington.moneydance\Documents\WORTHINGTON 2016-Onwards-20211108-0912.moneydance

Then loading archive file. resetting sync uuid

So, do you know where this file is:
C:\Users\Robert Worthington.moneydance\Documents\1fe10035-f747-4b4b-a6d5-fe39caf8c50e.tempmoneydance ?? Do you need it, if not, delete it.

Is this the restored file that you are opening: C:\Users\Robert Worthington.moneydance\Documents\WORTHINGTON 2016-Onwards-20211108-0912.moneydance?

How are you opening this file?

Can you delete the first file, then restart MD again, then send yet another console log ?

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494768992021-11-08T12:04:08Z2021-11-08T12:04:10ZSync between Windows based computers

Stuart;

Could not locate the file referenced.

Thanks for your help thus far.

I will do that final step tomorrow morning local time as it’s now past my bed-time. I’ve also loaded your diagnostic extension.

Thanks to that, I note that my restored dataset is SECONDARY which is currently correct but it now needs to become the PRIMARY. What I can’t see is how to change that setting.

Thanks again,

Master copy re-established. Backup done and archived.
Extraneous files removed from all devices and the various sync methods I had tried.

I have gone back to using “free” Dropbox sync rather than iCloud Drive now I properly understand how MD does not require direct access to Dropbox folders on devices and the 3 device limit does not restrict number of devices that can sync..

All sync copies re-established and now sync up OK.

I had previously used a shared folder on the iCloud Drive to sync between devices preparatory to what I’d read about users being able to sync via iCloud in an upcoming version. I now read that this is only available on Mac anyway so I’d lost access to MD through my iPad for nothing if my quick reading of the state of things is correct.

ICloud shared folders seem to present some issues on Windows machines anyway and I think this is what created my sync issues in the first place. The subsequent issues were of my own making as far as I can see. These included the way a backup file has to be restored and the role of primary and secondary datasets. I now have a much better understanding thanks to your help.

ICloud Drive sync on Windows seems to be hit and miss on occasion with the timing of its synchronisation, far more than OneDrive at least. I believe that, for whatever reason, the synchronisation of iCloud Drive on my Windows laptop (which was MD secondary) got out of step with my Windows Desktop where I had the MD primary dataset. However I tend to use the laptop far more frequently these days and hadn’t tried to use MD on my Desktop for more than a month. When I tried to use MD on my Desktop yesterday I knew from the state of transactions that it was out of date but no amount of cajoling ICloud to refresh the shared folder seemed to work.

The problems followed on as I tried to re-establish sync from a dataset that was set up as secondary I believe. What followed that was a mess of purely my own making.

Once again thanks for your help. You got me back on track again with the added bonus I now have iPad access again!

Regards
