Sold Stock Still Shows Shares

In the Register view I entered "80" shares, the selling price below it, the amount received and the fee-- and the cash balance came out correctly. The Portfolio view CONTINUES to show me as holding the 80 shares of the stock I just sold.

I read in some forums where people referred to 'their "0" balance of shares in their sold stock still appearing'. So I know it can get there. I just don't know what I'm missing or how I went wrong.

The cash is no longer in the security as it has successfully moved to the cash balance position. I don't want to keep seeing a stock that I no longer own, but I can't delete it as it needs to be available for end of year tax purposes.

OK, I fixed it. Going into it fresh, I opened up the problem "security" and a new box came up saying to adjust the amount of shares in the "sold" column. I did, and it worked, the 80 shares reflected as sold. I hope I can do it again. And I don't know why the prompt didn't come up for me before.

It sounds like you have "lot matching" checked in the security setup rather than "average cost" to determine the cost basis. That means that you need to go into the security and match which lot you want to apply against the sale you just made. If you track cost basis by lot, then that is the proper way to set up the security. If you don't then you can set up "average cost" and the program will automatically complete the sale and show 0 shares. You will find this information if you open the account that holds the security and select the "securities detail" button. Chose the security you want and click "edit security." Under "Cost Basis" select either "avg. cost" or "lot matching."

I do agree it would be helpful for the lot matching box to pop up at time of sale so you could just take care of the match then.
