upgrade to 2012, can't print checks correctly
Hello!
I upgraded to MD 2012, and now my checks won't print correctly.
I'm attaching what prints out when I try and "Print Test Page" in
the Preferences section. Everything that prints out on the page now
fits into the "stub" portion of the check...
I used to print out checks without a problem.
I'm on OS version 10.8.2...
Thanks!
Bill

Attached here is a screen shot, showing what appears on the "Check Printing" section under Preferences in Moneydance. It looks like the checks should print just fine, but they do not!
Help!

Hi Bill,
When you press the "Print" button on the check printing window, does the printer's page size match the size of the paper you're trying to print to? The PDF paper size looks a little odd, so I'm wondering if it's different than standard letter paper or the size that you're trying to use.

Scott:
The page that is shown matches what I'm printing to, but that's not what prints out! It's like the entire width of the check is compressed to fit into the check stub.

Hi Bill,
If you try printing one check per page instead of three, does it print the same?

Scott: No difference....

Hi Bill,
Ok, let's try resetting your preferences then in case something didn't carry over right during the upgrade. This will reset your settings (which can be undone if it doesn't improve printing), so Moneydance will appear as though having been installed for the first time, so you may need to re-open your data set and you will need to re-enter your license key.
To do this, go to Help -> Show Documents Folder in Moneydance, then in the Finder window that opens, go up one directory and you should see a folder that includes a file called config.dict. Close Moneydance, then rename the config.dict file (to config.dict2, for example), and re-open Moneydance. Open your data set again, either from the selection list if it's there or the Open Other button from the Welcome screen, then reconfigure your check printing and try printing again to see if that fixes the printing issue.

My apologies for not getting back... I will have to sit down and try that this evening after work... I will let you know how it goes.

Scott:
When I go to Help-> Show Documents Folder in Moneydance, this is what I get.
(Please don't be confused with the fact that my file is currently titled "Backup." It's not really a backup....)
How do I "go up one directory?"

Scott:
Think I've found the file using another method. I'll get back to you shortly...

Hi wjr,
You may want to wait for Scott to confirm this, but looking at your screenshot the 'backup.md.moneydance' data file has both a .md and a .moneydance extension.
I can't say whether that may be what is effecting Moneydance's check rendering but it might be worth your while to rename the data file without the .md extension.
For example: backup.moneydance

Well, I tried what you recommended, but to no avail. The entire width of the check is shrunk to just print in what would be the stub, even though the image shown when I "calibrate printer" shows it across the whole width of the page...

Kevin:
Not sure how that would have happened with the naming of the file. I'm curious if that would impact this problem at all.

Hi Bill,
I'm sorry, I was mistaken about the location of the preferences file on OS X, which is why you couldn't see it. In the screenshot you sent, you can see the backup.md.moneydance folder/bundle on the right--the "config.dict" file is located in:
Data/Library/Application Support/Moneydance
relative to the pane that contains Container.plist, Data, and OldData--so instead of being in the Documents folder that shows backup.md.moneydance folder/bundle, change to the Library folder in the second to right-most pane, then go to Application Support, then Moneydance, and you should see the "config.dict" file I'd like you to rename to try printing. Please try closing Moneydance, renaming that file, then re-opening Moneydance and see if printing improves after having reset Moneydance's preferences.

I had found the file, by using the "search" feature. I tried renaming it, and, yes, Moneydance did ask me to locate the data file that I wanted to use when I tried re-opening Moneydance. But, then I had the same issues in terms of printing. It's still trying to fit the whole width of the page into the check stub section.
Your message brought up something interesting. Under Library/Application Support/, I have no listing for Moneydance.... Are my files somewhere else? Can the program not find the files it needs?

Hi,
We don't think this is related and depending on your version of OSX, Moneydance will do slightly different things with internal storage.
Can you tell me, do the other print features of the program work as expected, for instance if you print a report or the register does that look unusual?
Thanks.
Sincerely,

Jon:
Interesting question, and the other printing functions are ALSO weird!
Just tried a transaction register, and it printed Landscape, one
transaction per page! So, it was technically using the same portion of
each page as when I print checks!
Wow...

Bill,
I'm wondering if you download and install this program called Jedit. Its a text editing program that is written in Java, just like Moneydance is. Because it is in Java you can print from it and see if it is having the same issue from Moneydance and that will tell us if the problem has to do with your version of java or if it is Moneydance.

Also can you send me the first six lines of your Console Log in Moneydance? (Help->console log).
Thanks.
Sincerely,

Jon:
1) Was able to download the java version of Jedit, and install it. I
typed a couple of sentences, and printed it. It printed across the whole
width of an 8.5 x 11 paper.
2) here's the info from the console log

Hi Bill,
I'm sorry that we haven't fixed what's going on yet! Printing issues are almost always the toughest.
The next thing I'm wondering is, since jEdit worked fine, whether the issue is with Moneydance's bundled Java for some reason. To test this, I would suggest downloading the 10.6 and below version, which uses Apple's system Java instead of our bundled Java, of the latest version of Moneydance 2012, which is located here:
http://infinitekind.com/downloads
The 10.6 and below version will function basically exactly the same as the 10.7 and up version, with the main difference being the version of Java Moneydance uses.

THAT's IT!
I guess I'll have to re-set my print settings, but it did print the check
across the full width of the page, with stub data in the stub area, and
the rest looking pretty close to correctŠ Thanks very much.
My question to you, and it's based on me being a bit unsure of the whole
processŠ. I've got a icon for Moneydance sitting in Launchpad. I've also
got an icon that I keep on the menu bar at the bottom of the screen. I've
got to change these somehow to "point to" the 10.6 version, instead of the
10.7 version?

Hi Bill,
I would suggest removing the links to the 10.7 and up version and recreating them with the 10.6 and below version, which is probably easier than trying to adjust the links to point to the right version.
Glad to hear that that seems to be fixing it so far!

Also, should I just move the 10.6 version from Downloads folder to Applications? Will that overwrite 10.7?

Hi Bill,
I would suggest deleting the version of Moneydance in the Applications folder and then moving the 10.6 and below version from the Downloads folder into the Applications folder.
