Lost Categories
I'm playing with the trial, hoping and praying it goes well, so I can buy Moneydancer and move away from Quicken. Here is a problem I face. I imported account names from an exported QIF file. The accounts showed up, I seem to be able to set up online banking without incident. But the original set of categories is GONE. Is there any way I can download/reinstall this category set? I'd hate to have to set them all up manually.
Thanks.
Kenny

If you follow the instructions from this link it should work. It is a 2 pass process, so don't try and skip a step.

Thanks for your reply, but I guess I didn't make the point clearly, or I'm not understanding your suggestion, because it seems like your suggestion is based on how to import accounts.
Just to be clear, what's now missing is the "stock" set of categories that comes with a clean installation of Moneydance. Like Medical Expenses, books/magazines, etc.
I don't care if i import that ones that were used in Quicken. I'd be quite content to have the "stock" categories that comes with the program.
Thanks, Randy!

So if you go to Tools > Edit Categories everything is blank?

yes. The only categories there are a "blank diamond" reference to one of my checking accounts, and two categories I entered manually. Screen Shot is attached.

Wow. I'm no techie so my only suggestion would be to download the program again and reinstall it. (You may want to back up your data to another location outside the MD directory to make sure you don't lose anything.) Maybe someone else would have another suggestion.

I hope someone does. I tried downloading and putting a new copy of moneydance into my applications folders. Overwrote the old copy, but it still knew where to find the data file (on another drive), so I assume there is a pref file somewhere pulling the program's strings.

When you created the file initially did you choose "minimal account set"? If so, that would explain why there are no categories. I think the other choice is "standard account set", you should create the file with that choice to get MD's categories.
MD interchanges the words "account" and "category" often.

Ok, I don't know if this will help, but I remembered reading something about this issue before. I found this thread which seems to address the same issue in posts 5 & 6: http://help.infinitekind.com/discussions/switching-to-moneydance-fr....

Randy and jbnyt are correct. That should resolve the issue.
