Taking an end-of-2021 account balance report made two months ago with one made today, account balances all match, but there's no way I would have missed being off $100 on the starting balance for several months! Looking at an account that doesn't have any splits, no discrepancy.

lmlewis22001tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/505812222022-03-29T22:56:14Z2022-03-29T22:56:14ZBeginning balance is wrong at reconciliation...

@MBledsoe - what version/build of MD are you using and have you recently upgraded?

Same problem on both. I checked this morning and both versions said they didn’t need updating.

I only noticed this morning. The last time I reconciled these accounts was February 15.

I am currently using 2022.3 (4068). I noticed it in the version prior to that one. I think I first noticed it right around 3/8.

Thanks so much for looking into it!

MBledsoetag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/505812222022-03-30T06:56:39Z2022-03-30T06:56:39ZBeginning balance is wrong at reconciliation...

I just tested this in 4068 and I cannot see a problem. I do not see what you describe. Perhaps you could do a test too?

I created 3 new banks. In the first I created a payslip deposit, with splits going out to banks 2 & 3, and also a tax line. The net was £45.

I reconciled bank1.

I then went to bank2 and reconciled that, ditto bank 3.

I then went back to bank1. Checked reconciliation..Still £45.

Then then went back to banks 2 & 3 and unreconciled the payslip split transfers.
Went back to bank 1 - still reconciled to £45.

?

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/505812222022-03-30T20:23:56Z2022-03-30T20:23:56ZBeginning balance is wrong at reconciliation...

My Mac is on 4063, but when I check for updates it says I’m using the latest version. I don’t have access to the Windows machine except when I go over to the non-profit location, and there’s no one there who would be able to check it for me.

I created a test file and ran a couple of reconciliations - they didn’t show a problem. I didn’t have errors on a different real file, either.

It seems like if I’d accidentally deleted a very old cleared transaction that the account balances would show a difference between the old backup and the current file, but they don’t. I also don’t have any uncleared transactions that could add up to $100 (my total is $100.00 more than the starting balance on the bank statement).

I’ll try to get over to the non-profit and get last year’s bank statements, but I went back 6 months yesterday and the starting amount on the reconciliation was off on all six months. It’s possible I missed it one month - not possible I missed it for six.

Can you think of any other way to spot if I did delete something? I ran account balance reports for 2021 and 2020 on the current file and compared them to the printed reports for non-profit reporting I have to do, and all the balances matched perfectly. It’s ONLY the starting balance for reconciling that’s messed up.

Thanks,
Linda

lmlewis22001tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/505812222022-03-30T20:33:12Z2022-03-30T20:33:12ZBeginning balance is wrong at reconciliation...

To be honest, the starting balance doesn’t actually matter. What matters is the new ending balance. It still sounds like you have deleted/changed/cleared a txn already reconciled. It happens. I know of no way to find it. The typical way is just to enter the new ending balance and see if it reconciles - or if something jumps out at that point.

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/505812222022-03-30T20:47:10Z2022-03-30T20:47:10ZBeginning balance is wrong at reconciliation...

I’ve had to adjust the ending balance when I start my reconciliation to make it match. I’ve checked everything I can think of at this point. It worked correctly in February. It does look like I changed something, but I don’t have any way to figure out what it could be, short of re-reconciling every single statement since I started using Moneydance. Fortunately, that’s only a little over 2 years of data. Guess I’ll need to pick up those old statements and get some coffee.

Thanks anyway!
Linda

lmlewis22001tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/505812222022-03-30T22:49:00Z2022-03-30T22:49:00ZBeginning balance is wrong at reconciliation...

From: sprimost

If you are "lucky", and the amount is more than the reconciliation, you
might be able to spot it as an "uncleared" amount.

While having to go through each statement, transaction by transaction is
the ultimate druge, you might just look at the ending balance of each of
the statements. Typically, it is at the point of the monthly interest,
or within one or two transactions.....just a thought.

sprimosttag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/505812222022-03-30T23:54:34Z2022-03-30T23:54:34ZBeginning balance is wrong at reconciliation...

I’ve done that - run account balance reports for years I have printouts for, and they all match. I went back 5 months comparing balances on the statements and it’s been $100 off back to October. I think just re-reconciling is all I have left to do - everything else is what it should be.

Thanks!

lmlewis22001tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/505812222022-03-31T07:03:39Z2022-03-31T07:03:39ZBeginning balance is wrong at reconciliation...

I am not support staff, just a user.
Hi lmlewis22001

Try this:
In the subject account register with the ALL filter clicked type 100 in the search box top right so the only transactions shown include 100
Study each of these transactions to ensure they are valid.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/505812222022-03-31T13:15:08Z2022-03-31T13:15:08ZBeginning balance is wrong at reconciliation...

Thanks - that was the FIRST thing I did.

I’ve been doing reconciliations for well over 40 years, both personally and professionally. I will be re-reconciling the account that I’m having trouble with because I’ve tried all the usual tricks of the trade already. If I don’t locate the problem that way, it has to be a programming error. I’m not the only one who is having this problem.

It’s quite possible I made a dumb error somewhere along the way, although deleting an older transaction should have screwed up account balances (which would have shown up when I reran reports and matched them to printed ones), and unclearing a transaction should have shown up when I filtered transactions to show uncleared transactions (I show $100 more than the bank shows). If I can find where the discrepancy starts, I can find the problem, whether programming error or user error. But the error wasn’t there when I did the January statements, and it was when I started the February statements. I went backwards all the way to October and the starting balance was off that far back, when it was accurate when I did the recs before. Something happened between the time I finished January and when I started February.

I appreciate that people want to help. Thank you! I’ll report back what I find when I have time to redo the reconciliation. I will find it! Fortunately I only imported from 2020 when I switched us to Moneydance last year, instead of all the way back to 1994. And fortunately I enjoy reconciling and problem-solving.

Blessings!

lmlewis22001tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/505812222022-04-04T14:26:39Z2022-04-04T14:26:42ZBeginning balance is wrong at reconciliation...

In reconcile, my beginning balance shows 0.00. Hi Patricia

You can enter initial balance its calculated

The Beginning Statement Balance on the reconcile window is a calculated value, you can enter/change it

Initial Balance of the Account + Cleared Deposits - Cleared Payments.

Hi Patricia

It does highlight to others how easy it is to make a mistake and think you have found a bug.

Have Fun, stay safe.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/505812222022-04-05T14:35:27Z2022-04-05T14:35:27ZBeginning balance is wrong at reconciliation...

Yep - that was my problem, too. I don’t know how it happened, but a transaction got entered AFTER I reconciled January 2022 with a date of January 3, 2021 - because January 2022 balanced perfectly, yet when I looked at backups from December 2021 the error was there. When I started balancing February 2022 and was looking for the problem, the transaction didn’t show up either on the dollar amount or when filtered for uncleared, so that’s a puzzle. But when I re-reconciled from when I started on Moneydance (we moved to Moneydance last fall, and I moved data from 2020 to have a little history) I found the transaction. Weird, but not a programming problem.

And thank God for Moneydance - SOOO much easier than Quickbooks, and MUCH more in line with the non-profit budget!

lmlewis22001tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/505812222022-04-05T20:53:27Z2022-04-05T20:53:27ZBeginning balance is wrong at reconciliation...

Entering the wrong year at the start of a new year is a very common error.

Sorting transactions by their cleared status is often a good way of picking up this specific problem.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/505812222022-04-05T21:26:10Z2022-04-05T21:26:10ZBeginning balance is wrong at reconciliation...

Yes, except I balanced when I reconciled January’s statements, and it didn’t show up when I was checking for cleared status.

It’s still a mystery, but the problem itself is solved.

Thanks!
