Moneydance not starting up

I'm getting this popup error message when I try to open a file in Moneydance.

"Moneydance was unabel to find the file: \\<pathname\WilsonsFinances.moneydance\safe\settings (this process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process)"

The problem was almost certainly caused by a machine crash whilst I had Moneydance open on this file. Now that I have moved to another machine, how can I tell Moneydance that opening this file is ok?

Thanks for your help,

    Reboot the computer?
    Turn of av/anti malware?

Tried a reboot and have turned off the anti-virus.

I'm guessing the problem is that some lock file was created and not deleted when my other computer crashed. So the presence of the lock file is preventing Moneydance opening the file.

If I knew the name of the lockfile (if that is what is happening) then I could manually delete it and remove the block from opening this file.

    Any help most welcome.

    Thanks, John W

Does MD start if you reboot into safe mode?

I personally doubt there’s a file to delete. Try to find the process locking the file. Eg.

You can use the Resource Monitor for this which comes built-in with Windows 7, 8, 10 and 11.

Open Resource Monitor, which can be found
By searching for Resource Monitor or resmon.exe in the start menu, or
As a button on the Performance tab in your Task Manager
    Go to the CPU tab
Use the search field in the Associated Handles section
See blue arrow in screen shot below
When you've found the handle, you can identify the process by looking at the Image and/or PID column.
