    Hello Alan,

Which version of Moneydance are you using? That was an error that we used to see a bit several versions back, perhaps the 2017 version. It usually indicates that something interrupted Moneydance when it was trying to save your file while exiting, such as if your computer unexpectedly shut down, or you had to force quit. Usually the easiest way to resolve this is to restore your latest backup file.

Alan, this indicates that the MD data file is corrupted. Since it is encrypted any corruption is impossible to recover from. This could be due to a crash or shutdown of the computer while writing a file, a bad sector on a disk or several other hardware or software problems. I haven't seen this error in a long while.

The best recovery for this is to go to a recent backup. I assume you have set to have a number (5) recent backups into a folder? Which folder is set in the settings and you can check there for which folder.

I assume this file is synchronized with your PC? If so you may only need to reset the sync and download a new data file.

That version is recent and did not create that issue. Something outside of MD caused the file to become corrupted. You will need to go to your backup or connect to a fresh sync copy.

You mention that you are using MD on both your PC and laptop. Are you using the MD synchronizing function? Are you using Dropbox Folder or Dropbox as the sync type? Are you accessing the file from both machines (which is a bad idea)? Is the laptop or the desktop the primary computer for syncing?

As suggested your best route is to restore.

    But anyway, a few things:

    0/ Windows or Mac?
1/ where is your dataset stored? If it’s within a cloud service then this may be the cause of the corruption.
    2/ do you sync? How?
3/ have you recently upgraded, from a version - if so, which?
4/ can you find errlog.txt file and post that? There is a slim chance that one of your .txn files is corrupt, and if that is deleted MD might load.

    Hi Alan,

I can see you’ve received several replies from our knowledgeable Moneydance customers. To add to their useful input I thought it's worth mentioning that you should be able to resolve the Bad Padding issue as follow:

    1) If you have moved your data file to a location different than the default you could return the file to this location. - if this is not relevant to you then:

    2) Choose File --> Restore from Backup (or 'Import New Account Set' from the Welcome window). Then navigate to and select the backup file.

When you restore data from a backup file, a new data file will be created for use going forward. This also means that you would have to reset sync anew.

If you'd like to re-name the restored file, you can follow the steps in this article from the knowledge base.

It's important you close the Moneydance program fully before you make any changes.

Then change the data file name to whatever you want - just be sure to retain the .moneydance file extension at the end of the file name.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.
