slow sync
I'm having troubles getting some of my computers to sync. Is there any way to know when a sync is done, or how much time remains?

I also just set up a Linux pc with Moneydance, and gave up waiting for the initial sync after 30 minutes.
I currently have a windows desktop with the primary data set. The secondary data sets include:
- android phone
- macbook
- windows laptop
- linux laptop (in progress)
I hope I haven't hit a limit on the number of secondaries!

Switch to Dropbox Folders sync.
Refresh your sync data... On primary, toolbox, advanced mode, force push/refresh sync... wait a couple of minutes... restart MD......

I don't use dropbox folders, and do not wish to. for security reasons Is
there a reason not to use dropbox connection?

You asked how to speed it up, I gave my view.. Up to you if you choose not to...
No, it's not security. It means all sync goes to local cache and therefore will operate faster and then sync to the cloud in the background (outside of MD).
You can still do the force push/refresh sync thing...

If I have dropbox folders on my pc, ANY app can access my dataset, even
malicious ones. If I only authorize Moneydance to access dropbox via
connection, ONLY Moneydance can access the dataset.
I would like to know if there is a way to speed up the sync process without
switching from dropbox connection.
It's also annoying to not have any idea of the status of the sync process.
Started, % complete, done would be helpful.

I've said twice above.... Try using toolbox to 'force push/refresh sync'

Sorry if I am being pedantic, but I really don't want to mess up my data. So, just so I understand correctly, can you answer a few details about 'force push/refresh'
- where do I find it in Toolbox?
- does it work with Dropbox Connection?
- does it only work on the primary?
I'm guessing that after I do this I just open the secondaries and wait an indefinite time without any status to know they are synced.

Toolbox. Enable advanced mode. Advanced mode button.
It works on DB Folder or DB Connection.
You should run it from your primary and on a good dataset.

Ok, thanks. I'll need to verify that the primary is in a good state first be reconciling all my accounts first, which takes a bit. Once that is done, I'll give that a try.

Your security concerns puzzle me.
Your MD data set is stored on your local computer. So I would have thought that any malicious app on your local computer can access your MD data set regardless of whether you are syncing using Dropbox Folders or Connection or not syncing the data at all.

All Moneydance data in the syncing relationship is encrypted using the password you set.
All Moneydance local data is also encrypted using either an internal password or one that you set

Your statement above is also inaccurate. The words “Finished writing sync data” appear in the status bar for 10 seconds after each sync.
Also, when you Quit the program, a message saying “Closing File & Syncing Changes” appears before the programs closes.
There is no % bar as normally when things are working correctly the sync completes very quickly as in reality only a few tiny files are involved in the sync process.

I should have been clearer. I would like to see status when the sync data is done reading. I believe that when I start Moneydance it is reads the data from my dropbox connection in order to sync up. I have never seen any status for that on the windows desktop client.

Also, let me explain my security concern better. I don't want to allow ransomware access to the dropbox sync contents by having it mounted on my computer. If ransomware encrypts my local dataset, I can recover from dropbox. That is why I prefer to give Moneydance acceess to dropbox via dropbox connection, and not use a dropbox folder.
