Open Other files are dimmed - can't select or open
Hello,
I'm trying to move my MD data files. I followed the procedure outlined in the KB but once the files are moved, I can't open them with 'Open Other' because they are dimmed out.
I'm stuck. Any ideas? Thanks.
Brent

Locate in finder and then double click.

No cigar. I double click the file and MD initializes with no file open. Then I clicked Open Other and navigate to data files and they are dimmed - unselectable.

Well that procedure does work. Are you sure you’re on the right file? Try right click, open with… moneydance

Tried right click Open, right click Open With. Neither worked. I have four different files. One finally opened after multiple attempts and it shows in the file list on the right of the MD opening screen. About->Show Documents Folder shows the folder where the files are located. Open Other still shows dimmed files. When I double click the other three, they all launch MD to the opening screen.
This a new computer - Mac Studio running Monterey 12.3.1. I restored from a Time Machine backup (from an old iMac) , then installed MD 2022.4 (4087).
Bizarre.

I found a workaround to this problem - partially. Double clicking the file launched the opening screen but didn't open the file. Dragging the file from Finder and dropping it in the file list in MD opened it. I repeated this until all files are opened and the list is populated.
The dimmed files in Open Other persists. But I don't have any others to open at this point, so that shouldn't be an issue for now.

What is the full name of the file you are trying to open, including the file extension at the end?

The file names are:
Mattox.moneydance
LR Retreat 408.moneydance
Cabbagehead Holdings.moneydance
PHS Reunion 50th.moneydance
They are all dimmed when clicking Open Other and navigating to the folder where they reside which is named moneydance/data/.

How strange. I wonder if the .moneydance extension has somehow become disassociated from the Moneydance program? In the Finder, try right-clicking on one of the files, then choose Get Info. In the window that appears, towards the bottom there's a section for Open With, and make sure the Moneydance program is selected. Or if it appears to be, is there more than one Moneydance listed there?

Hi Ethan,
I had two old app files that were still in the “Open with” list in Get Info but the current Moneydance.app was the default. I deleted the old apps and checked Get Info again and the old app references were gone. When I opened MD and tried Open Other I still got dimmed files.
Something really strange going on…
I’m recovering from a hard drive crash, so something may have happened in this sequence. Hard drive crashes->transferred critical stuff to my MacBook Pro. Installed MD from InfiniteKind download. Restored the files in question from backups. Was still running MD trial version. License code I had was 2019 so purchased new license and entered license code. Did only essential finances while waiting for new computer to arrive. New computer arrived and restored Time Machine backup. Moved MD files over from laptop to new computer. Setup folder structure for MD to accommodate my backup software.
Do the MD data files store anything about their environment (i.e., folder structure, location, OS version, MD version, license, etc.)?
The good news is that dragging and dropping each file populated the file list in the MD opening screen and that seems to be working, so I am able to work without a problem. This is a strange problem that your developers may want to track down.
Thanks.
Brent
