One thing I just noticed is that I set up some reminders to Auto Commit and I just checked and today's haven't done so. How can I figure out what's not working correctly?

I'm using the preview version 2022.5 (4090)

tsaxman28tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/553310322022-08-12T15:32:56Z2022-08-12T15:32:56ZReminders not auto committing

Hi,
Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.

Can you navigate to Moneydance->Preferences->Network and check if the Auto-commit Reminders (applies to the current file on this computer) option is selected?

This preference is specific to the currently open data set. It will not be visible unless the current file has syncing enabled.
The reason for this option is to avoid possible duplicated transactions if an auto-committing transaction reminder is recorded on two different computers before the changes can be synced between them.
By default this option is enabled on the computer that created the data set, and disabled on the rest. We recommend enabling this option only on the computer which is the most used and most often connected to the Internet.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

I have had a problem where a secondary synced file seems to act like a primary file but isn't. Auto commits from both primary and secondary files will double commit and that is a problem that preference tries to avoid.

I would use Toolbox extension to make sure the file is a primary file. And to check for any other issues with the file.

sthtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/553310322022-08-16T14:48:32Z2022-08-16T14:48:32ZReminders not auto committing

Please Craig can you send us your Moneydance error logs? The logs should include information about what might be causing the problem.

They are saved on your computer as an errlog.txt file.

You can get to your error logs as follow:

1) navigate to Help->Console Window to show the console log in a window

or

2) in the Finder, press ⌘⇧G and then copy and paste
~/Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Library/Application Support
into the field and press enter/return.

At that point the finder will show an internal folder containing the errlog.txt file which includes the log.

Finally you can paste the full content to your next reply.
I have had my data file in a sub-folder of Documents for 11 years now with no bad effects that I know of. I launch MD by clicking a link to that file in my dock.

This is convenient, makes backups more reliable, and allows a bit more control over my data.

I don't see anything in the change log https://infinitekind.com/previewdl/current/changelog.txt that would indicate that an update from build 4090 to 4091 would affect this issue at all.

@tsaxman28, I don't recall which part of the toolbox detected secondary vs. primary files and how to convert them. I am at work and don't have it in front of me.

sthtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/553310322022-08-18T20:36:22Z2022-08-18T20:36:22ZReminders not auto committing

@Maddy, I updated to the latest version. I've found that if I go to the edit reminder window and just click on OK (without changing anything) the reminder posts. I don't know if this is a one-time thing for each reminder or not.

tsaxman28tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/553310322022-08-18T20:49:30Z2022-08-18T20:49:30ZReminders not auto committing

Reminders only autocommit when you start / launch MD. If you leave MD running overnight without restarting, there is no auto…..

Also fyi, MD auto backups only happen when you quit MD.

So best to relaunch daily.

Toolbox will tell you if your dataset is not primary, so if there’s no alert then it’s already primary.

@sth - it makes no difference where your dataset is located… (of course, not supported on a cloud drive).

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/553310322022-08-18T23:10:59Z2022-08-18T23:10:59ZReminders not auto committing

Stuart,

I don’t typically leave MD running. What was happening was that the reminders were not auto committing after I launched MD. I was aware of the auto backups happening on quit. It seems that syncing is also now happening on quit instead of launch.

What happens if you press CMD-S which forces a save/sync wake-up?

Get your help/console and upload that here.

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/553310322022-08-19T13:23:49Z2022-08-19T13:23:49ZReminders not auto committing

When I press Cmd-S the message at the bottom says “finished saving data.” Nothing about syncing.

Here’s the console log:

tsaxman28tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/553310322022-08-19T13:35:45Z2022-08-19T13:35:45ZReminders not auto committing

Hmm. Well your dataset is 436.6MBs which is massive; yet the core data is tiny. So you either have loads of attachments or loads of old data that doesn’t need to be in the dataset.

iCloud sync is on, but I see very little sync info in the log. What happens if you edit a txn and then CMD-S? Does that generate an entry in console?

I’m wondering if the large dataset is clogging up matters. Can you run toolbox analyse dataset and objects and upload that?

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/553310322022-08-19T14:24:51Z2022-08-19T14:24:51ZReminders not auto committing

Probably a little of both (attachments & old data).

Here are the logs;

tsaxman28tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/553310322022-08-19T15:32:28Z2022-08-19T15:32:28ZReminders not auto committing

Yup you have > 400MB of attachments (all between 0.5 and 4MB each) and virtually no data (size). May or may not be a problem, but your backups, new syncs, etc will all take time.

I can see sync logging changes.

So if you open toolbox, open MD folder, open sync location. Then navigate to the out and in folders, do you see a .txn or .mdtxn file being created when you edit a txn and then CMD-S ? If so, do you see that file appear in the other Mac in its sync location?

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/553310322022-08-19T19:05:17Z2022-08-19T19:05:17ZReminders not auto committing

From: sprimost

Hi Stuart...that is odd because reminders/auto commit seem to work. I
never (well hardly ever) close and open MD. I am running MD 2019.3 on
LINUX/Manjaro with the KDE desktop. Was there an "improvement" in later
releases?

/scp

sprimosttag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/553310322022-08-19T19:28:07Z2022-08-19T19:28:07ZReminders not auto committing

Hmm. All my reminders are set for 1st of month and I have to relaunch MD if the date ticks over to get them to commit. I’ll have to do some debugging.

Are you sure you’re not committing reminders on one machine (that restarts) and syncing the commits to the other?

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/553310322022-08-19T19:43:08Z2022-08-19T19:43:08ZReminders not auto committing

From: sprimost

Definitely not! I only use sync to an Android w/MD app to "read"
balances...don't think I enter any transactions through it.

/scp

sprimosttag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/553310322022-08-19T19:57:50Z2022-08-19T19:57:50ZReminders not auto committing

I just checked the code and autocommit reminders code only runs whenever a file is opened. That’s it. If it stays open, no auto commits until it’s closed and reopened.

Do you file/open different datasets?

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/553310322022-08-19T21:48:35Z2022-08-19T21:48:35ZReminders not auto committing

From: sprimost

Hmmm...are we talking about the same thing. I have a reminder for my
cable bill that is set to "fire off" every 21st of the month. I
additional set an "auto commit" for 7 days previous. In preferences, I
have "auto create new transactions" in General tab and "auto-commit
reminders..." in Network tab. And "sure-nuf" the transaction appears in
my checking account register on the appointed date. The only thing I may
do is minimize the screen during most of the day, and just bring it to
the foreground in the evening to count shekels.

It is the same dataset. Could it be my version or LINUX? ;-)

Thanks

/Steve

sprimosttag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/553310322022-08-20T05:53:31Z2022-08-20T05:53:31ZReminders not auto committing

"auto create new transactions" is nothing to do with this. This sticks a new blank txn in front of you when you press enter in a register.

"Auto-commit reminders" is the setting to auto enter reminders when the date is hit.

I've checked again and the mechanism that tells MD to go through all Reminders and trigger the auto commit into the register (x days in advance) ONLY fires when you do File/Open and switch datasets or launch MD... The only other time is if you modify a reminder then that one reminder will get an auto commit check too.. Are yours all set through the month on different dates? Are you sure you are not File/Opening or relaunching MD?
