Matching imported transactions
Hi,
When I import qif files from my bank, Moneydance gets a bit over excited about "possible matches". I read in another posting that is primarily uses the amount of the transaction to give a possible match. This works very badly for monthly repeating transactions, and for transactions from ATM machines which are often of the same amount. The result is sometimes I mistakenly accept a possible match.
The interface or the algorithm could really do with some improving here. It is a big headache for me finding these after entering the months transactions. Are there changes here for 2010? I'm on 2008, but wouldn't really want to upgrade unless I knew this issue has been looked at.
Thanks!
Neil

There have been a great many changes to the transaction matching process in MD2010. The big difference is that when transactions are downloaded they are put in the register and marked as unconfirmed. This is indicated by the presence of blue dot. If you click the unconfirmed filter at the top of the register you can see all the unconfirmed transactions. If you click on an unconfirmed transaction the accept dialogue appears at the bottom of the screen. This will list the available matches in the register as well as offer suggestions for categorization. If you are in agreement with a match then select it and click the accept button.
There is also an option under File->Preferences->Network called "Automatically merge downloaded transactions" if you check this option Moneydance will do much more of the matching and merging automatically for you. You can always revert the merge if you are in disagreement with it.
There is also an option File->Preferences->Network called "Only match downloaded transactions when they are at most [n] days apart" you can set this to restrict how far back MD look in the register for matches.
If you want to try out MD2010 I highly recomend the current latest preview release available here:
http://moneydance.com/trac/wiki/Moneydance2010Beta
In my opinion it is much better than the current official release.
Sincerely
Ben Spencer
