I'm just a fellow user. The data will use the "Value prefix" defined in Tools | Currencies | Edit for the currency that the report is generated in. I think that should be your base currency but may perhaps be the currency defined for the account depending on the circumstances. On a default system, I believe the Australian currency symbol ($) is indistinguishable from the US currency symbol ($) so I'm wondering if the fact that you identify it as one rather than the other means you have accounts in differing currencies?
If you're only using one currency and you just want to not have the character precede the amounts on arrival into Excel you can nullify the Value prefix. Otherwise, I'd check your Tools | Currencies definitions and your Tools | Accounts ~ Currency Type definitions to ensure that your Accounts are setup as you expect.
Or are you saying that in MD it shows £ but in Excel that is converted to $? Then I imagine you would need to change your Excel default currency.

Perhaps I am misunderstanding the problem. Can you clarify?
Perhaps a screenshot of the MD screen would assist.
Cheers,
