Foresight causing Moneydance freezing
Hello,
I run Moneydance on my MacBook Air and home iMac. Normally they have worked without problems apart from a few sync issues but recently for some reason Moneydance keeps freezing. This is happening on both devices and they are both running the latest Apple software and 2022.6 Moneydance. It is very intermittent but the only way to use it agin is to force quit Moneydance and start back up. It then works immediately until the next freeze.
Are you are aware of any issues? Could it be something to do with the latest Apple software compatibility?
Thanks,
David

just a user - I am a fairly experienced Moneydance user, and have encountered your issue as well. MD has frozen about 3 times in the last few days, and I have to do exactly as you say. [force quit/restart] - It is a tiny bit frightening ("is something corrupt?"), but also a sigh of relief when it starts the next time.
A check on the "mac detail report" pretty much says "hang". Next time it happens I will look more closely, now knowing it is happening to others.
Given no changes to MD since Jan 30, I'd assume it is due to an Apple update to their OS (you are using Ventura, I assume?)
So - can anyone help? I doubt Apple would respond, so let's hope that another OS update will fix this, especially if more than one app hangs and people send in the reports (though I wonder if Apple actually looks at them)
As for MD helping - well, we can certainly mention it here (we just did), and hope Sean gets wind of the issue and pursues it, but it might also be an Apple/Java issue, and.... well - maybe someone will fix it.

Neither of you say, but wonder if this might be an M1/M2 issue?
I have MD 2022.6 (4097) running on x3 Macs. 2 Macbook Pros & an iMac all with Ventura 13.2.1 so far, I have not had any issues whatsoever. All 3 devices however have Intel CPU’s.

Hello, thanks to you both for the reply and yes hopefully someone at MD responds as this is very frustrating. For your information I am running Ventura on both. My MacBook is an M1 but the Mac is an older 3.4g i5 processor. Both are running Venura 13.2 but I think another update to this is due soon.
I am assuming it's an issue with MD running on the latest Apple software.

Are you using sync? If so, what sync method?
After the next force quit, before you launch md, find and upload errlog.txt file

Yeah I am using iCloud Drive sync.
I will have a look at that the next freeze.
I have just updated to Ventura 13.2.1 so will see if it continues!
Thanks.

try turning off wifi and see if the freezing stops...?

Thanks Stuart. I have had my MacBook freezing when I have had no Wifi on a flight while working on MD.

Ok. Upload the log after next freeze.
Also. What does toolbox say about your memory usage?
10 Posted by knollhead on 21 Feb, 2023 01:57 PM
Hi Stuart, where in toolbox to I get the memory usage?
Also do you mean on both devices?
Thanks,
David

Extensions menu.
Then when it’s installed, either look in help/console or bottom of toolbox screen.

Hi Stuart,
I opened up toolbox today as the MacBook Air froze this afternoon. The first time for a few days on either device! I wasn't sure where to find the error log so can you help?
To answer your other questions the memory is showing....
JVM Maximum possible 7.2GB Allocated 0.6GB Used 0.3GB - 5% of maximum
Also when I opened up toolbox it says that its in "Secondary Node'. I am assuming that Primary is my MacBook so I shouldn't change this to Primary Node?
Thanks for all your advice

As long as one of your machines is primary, then it’s fine
Launch toolbox. Top right. Open md folder. Console/error log. Note down this location shown. Then next time you will know where to look for errlog.txt after a force quit.

Hi Stuart, it froze again today after many days of behaving!
I have attached the error log.
Thanks,
David

The log is normal.
But, is it normal that you launched MD and then toolbox (for example) within 2 mins? Curious why you were running toolbox?

Thanks Stuart. I can only assume it's a problem running with the latest Apple Vetura software so hope MD will eventually fix this with an update.
I just opened up Toolbox to remind me where to find the error log!
Cheers for your help :-)

just a user - I mentioned having this problem above, but have not had the issue since that time (two weeks). Given it is OS specific (Ventura) and neither of us have provided a pathway to the problem, I doubt that MD can fix this problem at this time.
It is up to Apple (if the problem is endemic), or someone needs to reproduce the issue for MD to show what/where the problem is.
Also, since this doesn't seem to be very broad (I have only seen you and myself mention it), it will probably not be that high on the list to look at compared to threads that continue to repeat the same issue.

Just by way of an update. I have done both the recent upgrades to MD and now running 2023.1 (5006). I was still continually getting the issues with freezing and it seemed a lot worse since doing the second upgrade. This evening I was getting very frustrated as it was freezing almost non stop, I spent ages looking for some solutions and noticed when I removed Foresight from the Summary page it has been working with no freezing ever since. I have been using MD for hours tonight now as its year end with no freezes so the question is could this be the culprit or coincidence!
19 Posted by dtd on 01 Apr, 2023 10:56 PM
just a user - it may be Foresight, as I haven't had the problem for a month.
I think it may have been an Apple update issue, (which is why I had it), and Apple fixed something (I stopped having the issue), but it may not have fixed whatever Foresight is doing.
Someone else will have to look at Foresight, but you've provided a pathway to examine.

It could be either, without any definitive information it is just speculation I'm afraid.
It is often a case of being able say if I do X, Y happens or if I do Z I get this error message and here is the error log.
It's very difficult being able to track down a problem unless it can be consistently reproduced.

I have been running MD now for 8 days with absolutely no freezing after removing Foresight from my Summary Page. It seems too much t be a coincidence so mentioning it again in case it helps anyone else.

Can u re-add foresight and see if it freezes ?.
23 Posted by knollhead on 10 Apr, 2023 06:42 PM
Hi Stuart, I have added it back again so will let you know what happens, To aid confusion it is the 'Foresight - Reminder Review'
24 Posted by knollhead on 18 Apr, 2023 10:59 PM
I added Foresight and have run it for a while. It has started intermittently freezing again. When I looked at the Summary Page when it froze this evening Foresight has also frozen and the graph was not moving.

Just to confirm that I have had no problems again for nearly a month since removing the Foresight so it has to be connected to my issues
