I have backups from the past few days, but am unsure how to figure out which of them to inspect/open to find out which one to restore without doing further damage. I want to get back to a good file

Also it's not clear to me exactly what File > Restore from Backup does. What happens to the current file? Should I save it with File > Export Backup before restoring? Should I make copies of all five backup files before doing anything, because I will lose the oldest when I close the current file. Really need step-by-step instructions to get back to the most recent "good" file.

You can certain save all your existing backups to another folder before going any further.

When you restore from backup it does not overwrite the current file is creates a whole new folder based on the backup's file name, and the backups are created with the name and an appended date stamp.

BUT. When you file/restore backup it will ask you whether to retain sync settings (default yes). If you say yes, then sync will reapply all recent changes made since the backup. In your situation you should say NO and then if it’s ok setup sync again on all devices.

As long as you say no, you can restore as many as you like and use file/open to reopen any dataset including the original.

Thank you for the caution. Not what I would have intuited.
