    I'm a fellow customer.

There are forums systems not instant chat, hence responses more email like in terms of speed.

What is the actual encryption error? That hopefully provides more information as to the problem.

It just says "encryption error" and won't open the moneydance file.

I have never seen a Moneydance error that brief. Can you perhaps provide a screen shot?

If you need it the following site shows various ways of taking a screen shots.

That's all it says. A screen shot isn't going to provide any additional
    information. Thanks anyway.

The reason for a screen shot is a) to see the precise error message, b) so we can see whereabouts/when in the process it occurs.

I suggest you restore a backup.

What version were you using, and what version did you upgrade to?

Your reticence to provide information requested makes it hard to help you "fix this problem!"

Never mind. No one is helpful, they just keep asking for different
information. No solution just going through the motions.

Fine. We're not being helpful. Have a good day.

It's oddly affirming that you think we already have a solution to your problem, and that we are deliberately withholding it from you.

I'm sorry but people HAVE been trying to help you.

No one has seen a two word error message, Stuart anticipated that it may have been a encryption error about bad padding which indicates a corrupted file and hence suggesting a restore.

Let's see if Moneydance will start with what it thinks is a new install, to do so you temporarily rename the Moneydance configuration file called config.dict. You have not told us What O/S you are on or version hence the lengthy instructions below.

If you're using a Mac, it should be located at one of these locations within your Home folder:

    macOS Big Sur and later:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/config.dict

macOS X Lion until macOS X Catalina:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/config.dict

macOS X Snow Leopard and earlier:
    ~/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/config.dict

If you have any trouble finding your Home Library folder you can open Finder and hold down the option key while selecting the Go menu and the Library folder option should occur or you can open Finder and select Go -> Go to Folder and copy and paste in the following:

    ~/Library

This should pull up your local Library folder.

If you're using Windows, it should be located under your login directory at:

    C:\Users\(yourusername)\.moneydance\config.dict

    or

    C:\Documents and Settings\(yourusername)\.moneydance\config.dict

Depending on your version of Windows

If you're using Linux it should be located in your home folder at:
    ~/.moneydance/config.dict

Once you've found your config.dict file, ensure Moneydance is closed and rename the file (to something like config-org.dict, for example), then open Moneydance again and it will appear as though you've just installed Moneydance for the first time.

Does the software open to the Welcome screen?

If so does your data file appear in the right hand window, you can try opening it, if it doesn't use the open other item at the bottom of the screen to find and open it.

If you get an error now takes a screen shot and post it and after closing Moneydance also post a copy of the Moneydance error log; errlog.txt, it will be in the same location as the config.dict file.

Sorry, I'm on Mac OS. I have no library/ "containers" folder. I am on the
    lastest version of Mac OS.

I can't find the Moneydance file on my Mac or in Time Machine. Nor can I
get the Moneydance app to sync with Dropbox.

I'm sorry this is such a mess for everyone.

The library/containers folder may be hidden to you. We can help with showing the folders, if hidden.

I assume, by latest OS, you mean Ventura.

It would be helpful if you provided the version of Moneydance you were using and the version you upgraded to (you implied that the upgrade was when the encryption error occurred)

The syncing issue you just mentioned might be relevant, but for now we just need to be able to insure you can find and open your data file.

Mac OS Monterey 12.6.5. Moneydance 2023.1 (5006). I don’t remember the version of Moneydance i upgraded from.

I think the only real important bit here is "was it really old" - as encryption and upgrade issues can occur if the version was 2015 or earlier. Probably not the case, but problems are a process of elimination.

You will not get an encryption error from Moneydance 2014 or earlier files, if encryption has been used on such versions (and it was optional) the password screen will just shake and in any case such old versions generally do not work well on later macOS releases, so you would have likely seen other problems long ago.

I'm not a Mac use so am only vaguely familiar with finding files on the system, so someone else will have to assist with that.

At the moment I do not have enough information, and I do not think anyone else does, to speculate exactly what is occurring.

Also, going back to an earlier request - the pertinent information for you was "encryption error" and nothing else seemed pertinent.

Please understand that this user community has seen tons of errors, and what to you might seem unimportant or irrelevant can scream out to us with information. So notice you now have three requests for a screenshot of "when everything went wrong". Such a screenshot almost always provides us with information. And if we are wrong, that screenshot will provide even MORE info because it would be unique.

    dwg,

Here’s a screen shot. All the files on the right have no account data. "Open other” shows no files at all. I was finally able to find the config.dict file.

dtd is a user just like I am. He also knows a hell of a lot more about Mac than I do.

I'd suggest changing the When starting selection to "Open this Window" this should stop a problem loop at at this stage.

You original file looks to be GJ's Money. Try opening it and see what happens, if it displays an error I'd like to see a screen shot of that.

As you have found you original config.dict file I'd like you to open it in a text editor, don't change anything in the file but look for a lines that has a text string of "lic" in it and that should have a date and a key. If you can tell us what that starting characters are in the key that is the text before the hyphen it tells us what your license version was, provided that any older license data has not been removed. It may be possible to downgrade and get things back onto an even keel that way.

    Hi dwg,

I closed my moneydance app and reopened and this is what I’m seeing. Obviously, I’m still having issues.
