Portfolio view screens refreshing with different content
Hello
For a while, the porfolio view sccrenes in each investment category keeps refreshing wiht differnet data and values, occassionally even showing no data. I keep hoping the updates will fix it but no luck.
Attached is a doc with 3 screenshots. The first is when I initially open a portfolio view screen and the other 2 are the same screen after a few seconds. Notice the data keeps changing.
Is there a fix for this?
Thanks
Kerri

I'm a fellow user.
After this occurs I would suggest you post the Moneydance error log errlog.txt
You can either open the Moneydance console and save the data (Moneydance menu Help --> Console Window)
Or upload the file from disk. Depending on what operating system and version you are using the error log should be in one of the following locations
1. macOS
If you are using a Mac, it should be located at one of these locations within your Home folder:
macOS Big Sur and later:
~/Library/Containers/Moneydance/Data/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/errlog.txt
macOS X Lion until macOS X Catalina:
~/Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/errlog.txt
macOS X Snow Leopard and earlier:
~/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/errlog.txt
If you have any trouble finding your Home Library folder you can open Finder and hold down the option key while selecting the Go menu and the Library folder option should occur or you can open Finder and select Go -> Go to Folder and copy and paste in the following:
~/Library
This should pull up your local Library folder.
Some Moneydance files/folders on macOS are likely to be hidden, on macOS to show hidden files the key sequence CMD-SHIFT-DOT (that’s a period or ‘.’) will show them.
2. Windows
If you are using Windows, it should be located under your login directory at:
Windows Vista and later:
C:\Users\(yourusername)\.moneydance\errlog.txt
or
Before Windows Vista:
C:\Documents and Settings\(yourusername)\.moneydance\errlog.txt
No Moneydance files/folders are hidden on Windows.
3. Linux
If you are using Linux it should be located in your home folder at:
~/.moneydance/errlog.txt
Some Moneydance files/folders on Linux will be hidden, so for example the .moneydance folder that exists within your login folder is hidden. On Linux to show hidden files the various file managers generally have an option to view hidden files. In a terminal session (i.e. at the command line) use the command “ls” with the -a flag to show all files including those that are hidden.

Adding the errlog.txt to the thread

Yup you have sync errors. This causes what you are seeing. Can you do this. Toolbox extension. update mode. Advanced menu. Force refresh / push sync data. Once it finishes restart all MD apps on all devices.
Then go to your portfolio.
Out of interest grab and upload a new help/console after all the above.

Hi. Thanks a lot.
I tried what you suggested but the portfolio screen still refreshes.
Attached is the errlog.txt file and then 3 others were also created
(attached as well).
Thanks again for your help

Nothing attached?

Anyway, with MD closed, from the dropbox sync folder:
C:\Users\kerri\Dropbox.moneydancesync:subpath=bd2bc328-8f99-476c-8df1-792ae95d8ae6
manually delete this file:
1230d03d-da63-4952-803d-2c1837b5cffa.txn
Restart MD... Upload latest console again...

Nothing attached... You need to attach by viewing the thread in this web page. Do not try to email the attachment... Just upload the latest console...

Oh ho. Wasn't aware of that!
Ok, did it on webpage.

No errors now... I would also do this.
Toolbox, update, advanced, shrink dataset (use 0 days).
Then restart.
Edit any transaction,
restart again...
Has the problem gone away after this?

Ok did the action recommended above as well. Not seeing any refreshing on the Portfolio screens! So I think everything is now ok! Many thanks for helping to fix this issue.

Glad Stuart was able to help you.
Your description did sound like a problem with syncing and probably some bad transaction files (txn) which is why I suggested posting the error log, as these will get reported in the log.
Just for your information the entries in the log like:
Error reading synced transactions from file 1230d03d-da63-4952-803d-2c1837b5cffa.txn: java.lang.Exception: Unsupported action:1983507: from file 1230d03d-da63-4952-803d-2c1837b5cffa.txn

Is what points to the syncing errors.
Your observation of numbers changing as Moneydance tries to perform the updates is a typical indication of the problem as well. No Moneydance update will help it requires human intervention to resolve these problems as it is a data level problem.
Stuart took you through two potential fixes. Using Toolbox is the easiest one to use, but it does depend on where the txn file is in the data structure as to whether it works or not, in your case it was necessary to go and delete the problem txn file from the disk.
16 Posted by Stuart Beesley ... on 14 May, 2023 07:44 AM
FYI. The reason to delete from disk is that this is a .txn file from mobile with an error and therefore has not been processed. But moneydance continually retries and fails. I have previously asked IK for the system to delete these upon failure, but…. Additionally, if you use Dropbox Connection type, you have to delete from the cloud folder itself online..
