Large backup archive files

I am using MD 2023.1 (build 5006) and recently noticed that my backup .moneydancearchive files are much bigger than they used to be. Over the years, they've slowly grown in size to around 200MB (I have many years of data), but recently they have ballooned to over 1GB. (I don't think I could have attached any receipt files to cause this.) Also, I don't know if this is related at all, but I just started noticing that, every so often, say every 5 minutes or so, MD freezes for 10-20 seconds as I am, say, confirming a transaction or updating a transaction category. As far as I can tell, the data are all fine. Does anyone know how I can troubleshoot this? Thanks in advance.

just a user - use Toolbox, Shrink Data Set.

Given you don't know why this has happened, you may want to post the "pre shrink" output which describes what is there and what can be deleted without an issue. The "trunk size" is the most important item, as that is the totally untouchable part.

If you do feel comfortable and want to proceed (since you will have made a backup), put in 0 days as the days to hold.

Do a BACKUP of course, in case everything goes totally weird. Stuart really does work to keep things safe, but do a backup.

As for the 10-20 second freezes, we can see if they are still there after a shrink, and deal with that if so.

I personally have 35+ years of data, my data set has bloomed to 300mb before, but my "core" is about 100mb (i.e. after shrinking, which I shrink about quarterly, as the database does grow over time.

Last point - do you sync to other devices? Won't stop the shrink, but you might want to shrink other computers syncing as well.

    Hope that helps.

Great suggestion. I did a "dataset file analysis" and got this popup
    message:
"Your dataset contains 5275 files and is 599.3MB.5 non-core files were
    found consuming 400.5MB."

The report then shows that there are a handful of unusually large core
    files:

Finally, I ran the "Shrink Data Set" option with zero days but did not
    proceed. Here is the output:

It doesn't think it can delete the handful of really large core files. I
really don't know what I could have attached that is 181MB in size!

Well, it appears your trunk is 37.9 mb - a lot smaller than 1gb.n Attachments about 91.6 m - seems like your dataset should be definitely under 200mb

The SyncOut appears to be the biggest issue - again, are you trying to sync with other devices?

    I'd suggest 1 of 3 things:
    1) Wait for Stuart to notice this and respond.
    2) Go ahead and shrink (with your backup at the ready) and see what happens.
    3) Push a new sync (which is also in toolbox) and see if that eliminates what seems to be (probably) old sync files.

    • please repost the analyse output without the redaction. I don’t need to see your username, but I do need to see the file names on the right.

    • are you using sync, do you want to use sync?

    • please grab help/console. Upload contents.

    • if you’re not using sync, toolbox, update mode, advanced, shrink dataset, 1 days, YES to purge out. But respond to the steps about first.

    • If you do shrink, please post a new analyse and help/console after too.

    Hi Stuart,

Thanks for your reply. I was AFK for a few days but am now back.

       - I'm not comfortable posting the filenames without redaction. Bit too
much personal information there. What is it that you are looking for?
Filetypes? Is there any other way I can help you help me?
       - Yes: I am definitely using sync. I have 4 macs and one ipad
       participating in the sync.
       - I'm sorry, what do you mean by "help/console"? Are you referring to
the scrolling text in the main Toolbox window when it starts up? (It starts
with the Moneydance Version, license data, DB objects, encryption details,
       etc.?

Help/console refers to the contents of the window that results from the Moneydance menu item Help --> Console Window, it is effectively a potentially more detailed version of the Moneydance error log errlog.txt.

Let me clarify: If there is a way to send these logs direct to a single
person, I would do that, but not post to an open forum.

Stuart will usually respond to such a request by providing an email address, where he is located it is now around 4am.
