Income & Expense Report mixes currencies, but shows $ symbol even for other currencies

The Income & Expense Report displays and totals amounts with $ symbol and ignores that some numbers are in other currencies. In the attached screenshot, I have annotated in red the actual currency of the amount shown with a $ symbol.
One report with all amounts in € are all shown with $ symbol.
Maybe I shouldn't mix different currencies in one report, but at least MD should not attach a $ symbol if actual currency is not $

    Hi Fred

In reports such as Income & Expense all values are in the Base Currency. In your case $.
Any value that are in another currency are first converted to $ using the relevant exchange rate listed under TOOL – CURRENCIES before appearing in the Income & Expense report. Thus its important you use say the Extension Quote Loader to retrieve exchange rates as well as correctly setting up accounts and categories in foreign currencies.

    Hope this helps.

    Hello Derek,
First - thanks for your continued support contributions.

In the attached clip, as an example, look at the two deposits made in CHF (Swiss Francs) into my € (Euro) bank account. (I do have other accounts which are $ based).
The two originating Foreign Amt in CHF are 418 and 373 respectively, not $ as shown in the report.

When I receive these deposits I enter the actual Deposits amounts, as reported by the French bank, in € as 423.29 and 377.72 and I enter the originating Foreign amount into the corresponding field, which yields the actual exchange rate used by the bank, and not some none-applicable interbank rate, that I could download through the Quote Loader - this would never reconcile … By the way, these two deposits were on the same day.

The transaction report shows the Foreign Amount, but labelled as $. This is wrong.

    Hi Fred

Attached is a PDF I created some time back so I could remember how Moneydance handles foreign currencies, it may explain what I suspect you are doing wrong.

I have attached the PDF as I can’t see the full picture of how you have set up account or category to handle foreign currencies from your Screen shots. However one of your screen shots is titled CHF_Deposits_into €_account which make me think you are entering the € amount in the wrong field, it should be entered into Foreign Amt, assuming the account has been set up as a $ account.

As I say this is a guess as I cant see the full picture on how things have been set up.

    Hope this helps.

The sample postings are from an account I am holding at a French bank in Euro ( I live in France). No Dollars involved here. I am entering the Euro Amounts into the Deposit field in this Euro based account, and the originating Swiss Franc amount into the Foreign Amt field.
Please reread carefully my posting where I explain which amounts and origins i am entering. No mistakes on my side

    Hi Fred

Your last post add another bit of information to the picture.
To get the $ sign suggest that you may not have set the Base currency correctly to Euros.
Click TOOLS – CURRENCIES and confirm BASE CURRENCY reads EURO.

    My Base Currency is Euro.
I used to live in the USA until 2 years ago. So I have 10 years of history in MD all in US Dollars. Today, besides my French bank acct in €,  I still have one bank account in USD and all 3 of my investment accounts are in US$.
I have no problems with any of this in MD.  But the Inc & Exp Report can clearly not cope with this. Look at the bottom 2 lines in my first 2 posted clips, were MD report shows the totals in $ and in €, of course wrong values ….

Maybe IK would like to chime in.
    Thanks

    Hi Fred

OK you have provided a bit more of the picture. It would be helpful to show the Euro and Swiss bank account registers in more detail to show how you have transferred the 373 and 418 Swiss Francs from a Swiss bank to the Euro bank as shown in my screen shot? The 373 and 418 Swiss francs should not show up in a Income and Expenses report as it is a transfer unless you are adding the funds by using a category. As you can see I still haven’t got the full picture as to what you are doing to be able to understand why the reports are going wrong.
The attached screen shot of the test data set I have set up seems to indicates the Income and Expenses Report is working correctly. Test using Windows 11, Base currency Euros and Moneydance 2023.2(5007).

    Hi Fred

See new attachment. I added investment interest 418 and 373 into the Swiss bank account and this shows up in the Income and Expenses Report correctly.

    Hi Fred

Your post Jul 19 2023 @11:24 AM is a private post so bit surprised I can see it. Did you change it to Private?

As far as your problem, sorry I don’t know what’s going wrong. I can’t reproduce it.
My best suggestion is for you to create a new sample data set, FILE – NEW and add some accounts and a small number of transaction so that when the Income and Expenses Report is run it duplicates the problem you are seeing in the real data set. This way you can make a Moneydance backup. FILE – EXPORT BACKUP and post that. Then users or support staff can see the full picture and can work out what is going wrong.

I am posting this reply in the new private discussion as well as in the original discussion.
