Download Transactions Help!
Hello!
I've grown tired of waiting for Intuit to come out with a decent version of Quicken for Mac. I've been using Quicken Mac 2007 for many years and was never really crazy about it, but it worked. I recently tried Quicken Essentials for Mac 2010 and absolutely hated it, so asked for a refund (which they gave me). I've now downloaded the trial of Moneydance to try out.
I exported my data from Quicken Mac 2007 as a QIF and imported it into Moneydance with no problems. Moneydance showed the correct balances for my accounts and items marked as cleared in Quicken were marked as cleared in Moneydance. So far, so good. Then I setup Moneydance to download from my bank (State Employees Credit Union) and told it to download transactions, even though there were no new transactions since the Quicken file I just imported had last connected. WHOAH! Now I had a TON of duplicate transactions and my balance was WAY off. I didn't save the file after that, so I'm now back to what had been imported from Quicken.
Did I do something wrong? Any suggestions? I like the look of Moneydance so far, but it's going to be unusable for me if it's going to duplicate transactions every time I connect to the bank.

HI Scot,
I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I can explain what happened, however. The first time Moneydance downloads from a bank, it will pull down everything the bank offers (usually around 3 months worth of data). Every time after that, it will only download new transactions since the previous download. To make sure it's not downloading duplicate transaction, Moneydance looks at the transaction ID of transactions it's downloaded.
THe problem you're running into is that, when you import transactions into Moneydance from another source, the imported transactions don't have a transaction ID. Therefore, Moneydance has no way of knowing that a downloaded transaction matches an imported transactions. You'll have to go through and match the duplicates to make everything come out correctly. Luckily, this will only happen when you're first setting up your account, since after that everything you download will have the transaction ID.
Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions, and thanks for using Moneydance!
