Corrupt file

I am running MD on my Windows desktop and Laptop as well as on my Android phone. Opening the primary file on my desktop today I got an error message java related talking about a corrupt data element. I started a new file then restored the backup which seems complete, although all of the sidebar accounts are not as previous. I also have a backup on the laptop made today. Is it best to stick with the desktop backup of replace with the more recent laptop backup - any issues there - like primary account?

    Hi Philip,
Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.

If you have restored from a backup, you should set up sync anew.

    1. Set all computers to Don’t Sync - by navigating to Moneydance->Syncing.
    2. Reboot Moneydance on each computer
    3. From the Primary computer (where you data is stored in the default location you should navigate to File–> Syncing and choose Dropbox Folder.

    Please note:

With "Dropbox Folder" Moneydance will just read and write files to your Dropbox folder on your computer, which means that you need to have Dropbox installed and running, but you don't need to be online in order for Moneydance to read and write the changes.

    1. Take note of your existing passphrase or set one - you will need to enter the same on the other computer later. - Simply choose Show Passphrase from Moneydance->Syncing.

5.On the secondary computer, you should navigate to File –> New– >Open Synced File choose the same sync method (Dropbox Folder) and enter the same passphrase as the primary computer.

From your phone: Launch the mobile app and select Settings->Syncing via Dropbox->Disconnect. Restart your phone

Launch the mobile app and choose the same file as your computer.
Enter your Password to match the Passphrase on your computer.

Finally, enter a "dummy"" transaction on each device and allow a few seconds for them to sync. They should display exactly the same transactions.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

Hi Maddy - good to see that you are still there!

The problem is that both machines are secondary, because I restored the backup from my secondary machine on my primary computer. If I go to syncing it wont allow me to change the method - shows as don't sync., but also reveals an old password.

If I go to the secondary machine and open MD syncing shows as Dropbox connection and will reveal a password in the grey box if clicked (password is correct).

I suppose I could restore an older backup on the primary machine then import more current data from the secondary machine? Would that work or duplicate everything?

Maddy - almost there I think - I have updated MD to the latest version on the Desktop and Laptop.

I used TOOLBOX to reset Desktop to PRIMARY machine. On this machine SYNCING shows Dropbox connection and passphrase "xxxx" which I cannot change. Is this set in concrete??

I used TOOLOBOX on Laptop to determine that this is still the Secondary machine. SYNCING shows Dropbox connection but passphrase "ZZZZ" which again I cannot change.

My Android phone also shows passphrase "ZZZ" and syncs with the Laptop.

How do I get the Primary machine re-established as the primary source for syncing with a common passphrase?

    I'm guessing:

      * Delete MD from the Laptop and Android phone
      * Re-install with desired passphrase

    I don;'t think that's the right strategy.

Maybe Stuart will jump in, but now that you have a primary, I think you need to use one of the Toolbox functions under Advanced Options... one of the "Force" bits for syncing, I jus don't know which one.

At this point do you have a good restored dataset?

    Assuming yes

    • use toolbox. Make sure it’s primary

    • then using toolbox. Update mode. Advanced mode. Force reset sync settings. Restart MD

    • then setup sync again.

    • then on secondary, file / new / open sync copy. Open the new sync copy

Yes, Primary machine now set with existing (old) password.

Secondary machine used toolbox to force reset - connected to dropbox with password above.

Phone - disconnected and reconnected with password above.

All looking good - just waiting for test transaction on primary machine to show up elsewhere. Perhaps delete dropbox sync file and recreate from scratch?

If needed, use toolbox, don't do it "by hand". Hopefully, it's all working correctly.
