Moneydance is eating up my application memory

 Since update my iMac to the latest Ventura system, it tells me I’m running out of Application Memory and to close some programs which are listed in a window. Moneydance was using 55.3GB of memory the last time, way above any other application which are mostly a couple of hundred MB, not GB.

I close MD and it all works until I open it again and use it. It may last a day or so before the same thing happens.

Has anyone had a similar issue with Ventura? Any ideas?

    Ventura should be fine. What version of MD?

    Can you grab help/console and upload here.

    Also install/run toolbox extension and then click analyse dataset and objects. Upload that output here too.

    Thanks for the reply.
    I'm running MD 2023.1 (5006) so up to date I think.

    I'm not tech savvy but found my way to the bits you requested (saw your name in there so you must know your stuff!) and loaded those files below. I hope that worked as it means nothing to me.

    P.S. I'm in Western Australia so time zones may mean I'm slow to reply.

    Ok. Your post 1 is misleading. You have upgraded to macOS 14 Sonoma. There are issues with this and MD2023.2(5006/5007) is not verified as compatible.

    However, one fix for your issues is to disable iCloud sync and switch to Dropbox sync.

    Can you try this and report back?

    PS - if you use toolbox, update mode, advanced tools, then you can run Shrink dataset and you will reduce your dataset from 24MB to about 14MB. Backup first.

    Glad you could use the files I sent to work that out.

    Sorry about the system I was using. I did the first post on my iPad and retrieved Ventura from my brain somewhere. I was away from the iMac and didn't check.

    I'll try the Dropbox sync. As I said, it used to take a day or two to get to the stage of overloading the memory, so results could be a few days.

    I had switched to iCloud and it has been better. Do I use Dropbox folder or Dropbox connection? I sync to my iPad and MacBook Air.

    Hi Colin,

    I noticed a problem (bug) in toolbox in your outputs.. Could you grab the latest PREVIEW from my site and repeat the tasks (in this order):

    • restart MD

    • click analyse dataset and objects. Upload that output here

    • Grab Help/Console, and upload that output here too

    NOTE: I also see this error:

    OSError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: u'/Users/colingeoffreyjones/Library/CloudStorage/Dropbox/.moneydancesync'
    

    ... this must be an old Dropbox folder... But I wonder why Toolbox cannot look at it. Any ideas?

    I didn't understand "grab the latest PREVIEW from my site " but I restarted MD and attach the files you requested. If you need something different let me know.

    I don't know anything about the error message. I'm already deeper into this than I've ever been. I did have some issues before switching to iCloud sync using Dropbox where not all of my devices would sync the same. I may have messed things up when I tried to fix things then.

    I've got another three hours I'll be awake but after that I'm off to sea for two days (I'm a ship's captain) so won't be able to respond from the iMac. I'll still have an iPad.

    I'll be home again about this time Friday.

    I haven't yet switched to Dropbox sync but will do so in a minute.

    Hi Stuart,

    Just tried changing to Dropbox (Folder) sync but when I went to the iPad to do it there, the most recent file was last year so I switched back to iCloud. I don't use MD much on my iPad and so don't really need it at the moment.

    I hope that's OK unless you have any other hints as to how to fix it.

    Ok this link will download the latest version of the extension
    https://github.com/yogi1967/MoneydancePythonScripts/raw/master/dist...

    Then unzip and there will be toolbox.mxt file inside. Then double click this file and it will install in to MD.

    Then restart MD and repeat the steps. And only then upload the two latest outputs.

    As for the old Dropbox file. You will probably have to use toolbox, update mode, advanced menu, force refresh/push sync data. Restart MD then try the iPad again.

    I'll leave it on iCloud for now. Might try Dropbox when I'm back after a few days. I'll have more time to play around with it then.

    Hi Stuart,

    I’m back home from sea and have followed your instructions to force reset the sync via Dropbox and it works. Thanks again for that.

    I should try to delete all the defunct files I was offered to sync with. Not sure how.

    I’ll leave MD open and watch if there’s any repeat of the eating up my application memory.

    I’m not sure if you thought this would fix it or if it was just something to try so try I will.

    I’ll let you know.

    Also, run toolbox, top right, click open md folder., open sync folder. It will show you all the sync folders (with looooong numbers). You can delete the ones not being used.

    If you’re not sure which is yours… in the main toolbox display, halfway down, it shows you your sync settings. It will tell you your number.

    I did the file thing but couldn’t quite work out how to delete the outdated ones. So I just left them there as I’m worried I’ll stuff something up.

    I don’t think it matters. I can try again in the future if I get motivated.
