I was trying to delete just a category. Been fried doing accounts for taxes and without thinking I typed in "Yes" and my entire Moneydance account - 9 years of info just disappeared. IS THERE ANY WAY I CAN GET IT BACK??? I have a Mac with Time Machine. Can I retrieve the "Current" file from my last save and will that restore my accounts?

    Hi David,

If you have Time Machine, then you should be able to restore your data. If you're using Moneydance 2012 and your data set was stored in Moneydance's internal Documents folder, then you should be able to locate your data in this folder within your home folder:

    Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Documents

Otherwise, I would suggest searching for files and folders ending with:

    .moneydance

or, if you're using a version of Moneydance before 2012, then search for:

    .md

files and see if you can find your data that way. If that doesn't work either, does Time Machine have a way to view the most recently deleted files and folders? That might show the data set as well.

Whew! Thanks Scott. I just got home from where I was working when I lost
the files and I haven't had time to try the things you suggest. Just wanted
to thank you in advance before trying them. I do have MD 2012 so will try
the file recovery before looking in Time Machine for older files.
    warm regards,
    David

OK, tried the suggestions looking for moneydance files and there is
absolutely nothing anywhere on my laptop, not even in the trash. I can't
find a home folder either. I do have the MD app for my ipad. Might that
have the files on it and if so, could they be transferred back to the
    laptop?

AND I can't find anything in Time Machine either. Could have sworn I backed
up that data. Nothing with .md or .moneydance anywhere. Is there anything I
    can do?

    David

Can't find any moneydance (or .md) files anywhere. Not even on my backups. Do you think the files are still on the hard drive and can be accessed if I take it to a computer shop?

Scott, I finally found an old .md file on Time Machine. It was only there
until I converted my files to MD 2012. After that nothing shows up in Time
Machine backups. What I am wondering is where does MD 2012 store my
backups? I have been trying to find out how to get to the backups from
within the program but there is no help file that I can see. Under
preferences it says that MD will store the 5 most recent backups - but
where are they? Can you help me with that on a Mac?

    thank you in advance,
    David

    Hi David and Scott,
I did the same thing today and, like you, I can't locate backup files in Time Machine. I'm using MD 2012.5. I don't see "Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Documents" on my HD or Time Machine.

If your OS is Mountain Lion, the "Library" folder is hidden. To open it, you need to have the Finder up, click on "Go" in the menu and then press and hold the "Option" key. The "Library" folder will appear under "Home" in the list. Choose it and the library folder will open.

Then you should be able to find: Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Documents

    Hello,

Moneydance 2012 makes checkpoint backup files internally within the yourfilename.moneydance data file. Please see http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/moneydance-2012/how-to-access-inter... for information with screenshots on how to restore these files.

    Hi David,

Since you're using Snow Leopard, I would suggest looking in this folder:

    Library/Application Support/Moneydance/Documents

within your Home folder to try to find the .moneydance data set there. This, however, only applies to you if you were storing your data set in Moneydance 2012's internal Documents folder--if you were storing it somewhere else on your computer, you'll have to check that folder on Time Machine for your data set.

    David,
i'm running Mountain Lion. I followed the instructions to reveal the hidden library file but the container...data file was empty. Perhaps hitting the stupid "delete your life's work" button that purged this folder. I did, however, find a .md data file in the archive folder. It was a month old and I believe this was created when I upgraded to 2012. I am now in the process of entering downloaded bank info into the accounts. I'll probably find some errors but the data seems to be restoring properly. I'm going to be sure that backups are occurring properly in the future. Good luck.

    Vince,
Yeah, I ended up doing the same thing, only finding the old file on Time Machine. Just spent the morning restoring data from Oct of 2012. At least I didn't have to go back to 2004 when I first started using MD.

I think MD ought to have a secondary warning - after you type "yes" it comes back with "Do you REALLY want to do this?" That would have made me hold off until I actually read the entire warning. I think it is an important enough command that there should be more warning around it. The warning should be in color (red), with boldface, "If you do this you will completely delete your entire file." instead of it being sort of buried in what looks like html characters

Thanks. I called Apple to ask how to reveal these hidden files - they didn't know or wouldn't tell me. Unfortunately this folder empty. I found an archived file created a month ago when I upgraded to 2012.5. I was able to reconstruct the rest of the file. Although I was distracted when I hit the delete button (intending only to delete a register entry) I can't imagine why the thing exists.

Yeah, that's what I was doing. I only wanted to delete a category. That's why I didn't pay much attention to the warning glad we were both able to reconstruct. Problem for MD is that the reconstruction had little to do with the programs own abilities to help out.

    Regards
    David
