Update: Quote Loader, Getting Security Prices

As you may know the format of Yahoo web pages has changed. This has broken Quote Loader and Quote and Exchange Rates Updater for the Yahoo source. This is not a simple fix.

Quote Loader has been recommended as an alternative using the FT source. Often the ticker used on FT is different than that used on Yahoo so just changing the source may not work. To help you overcome this these steps might help.

  1. Set up Quote Loader with a source of FT against each security
  2. Click on Save Changes
  3. Click on Get Prices
  4. Once all prices have been returned (green) or shown in error (red). Check the successful prices to see if the new price makes sense. What can happen is that the ticker used on Yahoo could be used for a different security on FT, thus the price will be quite a bit different. Identify those securities which are wrong and add them to the list of failed securities.
  5. Use your browser to got to ft.com (https://markets.ft.com/data)
  6. For each security use the Search securities box (top right) to find the page for your security (eq. Apple Inc). Once you have found it ft.com will display the name of your security with the ticker used by ft.com (eg. aapl:nsq).
  7. Copy this ticker and paste it into Alt Ticker box against your security, make sure the Exch Mod box is empty by double clicking on the box and choosing the first entry 'Do not use an exchange'
  8. Once you have updated all failing securities click on Save Changes
  9. Click on Get Prices

That should solve your issues, if you still have issues make sure there are not any spaces or wrong characters in the Alt Ticker box.

I ran it today on pre-release 321007 and throttling kicked in. Completed 127 out of 385.

Hi, I have got most of my stocks working now by changing to FT but I used to be able to download cryptocurrency prices - BTC and ETH mainly, via Yahoo and now that isn't working. Any suggestions to get them working? I can still manually download the data and the ticker seems to be the same eg BTC-GBP

    Hi drmjkelsey

With the latest build of Quote Loader Yahoo should be working again, including cryptocurrencies.
Update and give it a go.

Unless you are running a old version of Moneydance if so which version. as there may be a fix.

    Hope this helps.

If anybody is interested in bulk downloads of security prices they should look at the STOCKHISTORY() function in the current version of excel. With a bit of formatting, you can create a .csv file that matches what was available for download from the old yahoo finance site, then import into Moneydance. With some VBA, it could be automated to retrieve a whole list of ticker symbols. Most of the common stocks/funds/etc seem to be available, but I didn't attempt any sort of extensive test.

    Hi Mike,

I hope you will have the time to implement populating yahoo stocks from oldest date to most recent (perhaps a toggle in the parameters tab). That way I can populate the prices over several days given the number of stocks I have in MD.

    Thank you

    Hi mdu

It is on my todo list. You will appreciate that this change was forced
on us by Yahoo. I have got it working for the majority of users,
however, it does take time to do changes. One of the hurdles I have to
overcome is getting time from TIK to verify my work. I have been
working with TIK to speed up this process. I also have to make an older
version of QL for those using MD 2020 and 2021.

I haven't forgotten about your request. I would suggest that you use FT
for those securities that work with FT.
    Regards
    Mike

    Hi Mike,

Yes, I certainly do appreciate the fact that Yahoo introduced a throttle on an otherwise great feature you implemented in MD. I'm glad it's still on your radar and look forward to a release when you can get to it and hope the process becomes smoother with TIK.

With FT, I recall it didn't support historical quotes and so I need to remember to use MD specifically on month close to reconcile my statements.

    Thanks again!

    Hi mdu

FT HD supports historical data for Funds. FT current data for Stocks, Funds and Exchange Rates.
