Dropbox Sync Issue

I am using the trial version of Moneydance on my PPC Mac running OSX 10.5.8. The desktop platform works well. I have been able to successfully perform a WiFi sync between both my iPhone and my iPad using the Network Syncing extension. I have also tried to perform a DropBox sync with my iPhone, but that sync always fails. I have read the posts on this site and have been unable to troubleshoot the issue.
My problem seems very similar to that discussed by frigchart in this forum (http://help.infinitekind.com/discussions/problems/9369-sync-ing). As best I can tell, his issue is still unresolved.

Here are the details for my iPhone's inability to sync with Dropbox.

  1. I am using Moneydance version 2012.5 (862).
  2. The Network extension for Moneydance has been removed; I set up the Dropbox syncing under the File menu.
  3. The Dropbox Folder is in my home folder (/Users/"UserName"/Dropbox)
  4. The .moneydance folder and its contents are in my Dropbox folder.
  5. When I try to sync on the iPhone through Dropbox, Moneydance (on the phone) asks for permission to access the Dropbox folder.
  6. I click the button to enter that permission.
  7. I do NOT receive a prompt for the password that I set up in Moneydance after entering that permission.
  8. I receive a dialogue window saying, "No Moneydance data files were found..."

Scott Meehan posted in the frigchart thread that the problem might be related to the version of Java used in OS X 10.5.8. That sounds like a reasonable explanation because there is an "Exception in..." message in my Console log on the line following the, "Save state file to dropbox" command. My console log is pasted below.

Any suggestions on a resolution for this problem?
The ability to sync between my desktop and my iOS devices through Dropbox will be an important factor in whether I purchase MoneyDance or not.

Thanks,
Robert

    Hi Robert,

Can you try moving your Dropbox folder using these instructions:

    https://www.dropbox.com/help/89/en

to another folder (within your Documents folder, for example) and then disable and re-enable Dropbox syncing via File -> Syncing and see if that works? You should be asked to give Moneydance permission to access your Dropbox folder.

If that doesn't work, can you send us a screenshot of the window that opens when you go to File -> Syncing and verify that there's a .moneydancesync folder on your Dropbox folder?

Also, just to double check as well, you're connecting to the same Dropbox account with both your computer and iPhone, correct?

    Scott,
I will try moving the Dropbox folder as you suggested and get back to you. I only have one Dropbox folder so the computer and the IPhone must be connecting to the same one. Good thought, though.

I just noticed a similar post in this forum by stuartmalone from March 13, 2013.
    http://help.infinitekind.com/discussions/problems/8810-powermac-to-...
Sorry I missed that one. He is using a similar Mac to mine with the same OS X version (10.5.8) and is having the same Dropbox syncing problem. Ben Spencer responded to that post and confirmed that the issue is related to the version of Java that runs in 10.5.8.

Ben said, "the problem is caused by an incompatibility with Moneydance and java 1.5." He went on to say, "The developers however think they can work around the problem and should have a fix in the next update."

Any idea on when that update will come out or if a work-around, other than WiFi syncing, exists?

    Thanks, Bob

    Scott,
I moved Dropbox using the information in the link you sent me. Dropbox did ask for permission to let Moneydance have access to my Dropbox Folder. A new .moneydance folder was place in the Dropbox folder. I also checked to make sure the mdata file was in a folder in the .moneydance folder. It was.
I tried syncing Moneydance on the iPhone after I checked everything in Dropbox. Still no luck. I get the same "No Moneydance data files were found..." message that I received before.
I was really hoping that would work. I'm thinking Ben Spencer got it right and this is an issue related to my Java version.
    Thanks, Bob

    Hi Bob,

Unfortunately that may be the case. Can you verify in your Dropbox folder that you have a:

    .moneydancesync

folder? The sync at the end is important and you're mentioning the .moneydance folder, so I'm wondering if that's not the right folder. You may need to view your Dropbox folder with the Dropbox web interface or iOS app to see the .moneydancesync folder, as it's often hidden in most operating system's file managers.

    Scott,
The folder in Dropbox is titled .moneydancesync. You were correct. Sorry I wasn't clear about that in my description.
Do you have any insight on when, or if, an update of Moneydance will be released and whether that release is likely to solve this Java problem? I like your product and want to purchase it. Unfortunately, the ability to sync outside of my home WiFi network is an important condition for that purchase.

    Hi Bob,

I think I'm going to ask for some help in analyzing your logs to see if we can figure out what's going on, but before that I want to check one additional piece of information. If you close Moneydance, then delete the .moneydancesync folder in your Dropbox folder and then re-open Moneydance, does Moneydance recreate the .moneydancesync folder in your Dropbox folder?

    Scott,
I did as you asked. I deleted the .moneydancesync fielder in Dropbox. I started Moneydance and a new .moneydancesync folder was created in Dropbox. I hope that helps.
I do appreciate how enthusiastic you have been with trying to help me solve this syncing issue.

    Hi Bob,

This is actually a spot in Moneydance where we accidentally made it incompatible with the version of Java that is available on your version of Mac OS X. We've fixed that issue in recent 'preview' releases of Moneydance which you can get here:
    http://infinitekind.com/preview

That should fix the error shown in your console log, so hopefully you're home free from here!

    Thanks,
    Sean
