Have a list of assets in the sidebar. If I make a new account as a child of the a parent account it shows up below the parent account (as expected). If I then edit the child account, and move it to be a child of another account it disappears and becomes a child of the new parent account; however, it is not shown on the sidebar. As far as I can determine there is no way to get it to show up again on the sidebar. For example with Bank balance (as an asset) as the parent account and create a checking account (as an asset) as a child account and a savings account (as an asset), I can see the both the checking account and the saving account on the sidebar; however, if I change the checking account to be a child of the savings account, I do not see the checking account under the savings account on the sidebar. Further if I change the checking account back to be a child of the bank balance account, it does not show up on the sidebar again. It will show up on the drop down at the top right as a child of the bank balance account. Basically how can I get the checking account to show up again on the sidebar?

You click the + sign at the bottom of the window (under the sidebar) and re-add the account manually

Stuart is correct on how to make what you want to work, and this disappearing issue has been reported to the developer.
