Upgraded Moneydance Version: 2024.1 (5118) - Will not Accept Licence Key from 2022
Hi,
I have just upgraded my Moneydance to the latest version 2024.1 (5118), which the upgrade option said would be free to me.
When I re-open it, it is in Demo mode and asks me for my Licence, which was bought in 2022, it will not accept it.
Please help me.
Thanks - Simon

I'm a fellow user.
Some users with a Moneydance 2022 license can use 2024.0 but not 2024.1
The problem is that the initial release of Moneydance 2024 in some cases accepted license keys purchased for 2022 as a free upgrade when it should not have. This has been corrected for Moneydance 2024.1, but the updater will not say that it is a paid for upgrade because the updater thinks the software already has a valid 2024 license for people who have only purchased 2022. The updater cannot be changed to recognize this as the problem is in Moneydance 2024.0 itself.
The Moneydance upgrade policy is that purchasing a license entitles you to use that version of Moneydance plus a free upgrade to the next major release.
Moneydance versions 2022, 2023 and 2024 are all considered major versions.
You have a number of choices:
1. You can downgrade to the version you were previously on. There have not been any data format changes in the latest release.
2. You can upgrade to the latest release at a discount https://infinitekind.com/update
This oversight has just been an unfortunate error. Your entitlements remain as they have been for many years.
Unfortunately these glitches happen at times.

Hello,
I have the same issue. How do I downgrade to the previous version? Will I loose any data doing so?
Thanks

Same here!
Did upgrade to 2024 (5117) few days ago and my 2022 license was valid (checked before install).
With 2024 (5118) however the license is not valid and had to revert to 5117 (no data lost).

I had the same issue as described by dwg.
I decided to get the upgrade at the discount, (very reasonable).
That supports the great work that the folks at ik do with MD, and lets me upgrade as new versions are developed.

@bryan - the last 2023 version is available here:
https://infinitekind.com/download_2023
There have been no database changes, so you will not lose any data, and anything you did in the first 2024 version will be maintained.

If you do wish to upgrade (there is no requirement to do so...), then the upgrade price will get you all versions of 2024 and all versions of 2025,
just as getting 2022 got you up to the end of 2023 [as discussed, a 2022 license getting 2024(5117) was a mistake in the licensing code]

The license history only works for licenses issued by IK itself. When they transferred the sale of licenses to Paddle they no longer can send you a license history.
The latest build corrected some code for determining the license validity:

So I’m looking to upgrade to 5118 - I’m currently on 5117 but I can’t work out how to buy the 2024 license (upgrade price) - I kind of assume I should buy this before I go to 5118 - i don’t want my accounts to go to demo mode - that sounds scary to me.
Is there a link I go to?

Go to https://infinitekind.com/update and enter your current license key, it should say you get a discount, probably with a link to the discount page.

So Ive bought a new license key. I am already registered for the current version and I cant find a place to enter the new license key. When I go into Register Moneydance, it says I am already registered and have a license, which I know will not be valid for 2024.1. I dont want to start 2024.1 as it will force me to Demo mode so am currently on 2024.0 with a new license key in my hand and nowhere to enter it..
Politely please, where do i put it?
Rich

I'm a fellow user,
Well if you are using a version that is currently registered the software does not have an option to install another key.
So for example if you have Moneydance 2023 and you know you will need a new license for Moneydance 2024 and purchase it, there is no option in your current version to enter it - and it would not work anyways.
When you then install Moneydance 2024 over the top and Moneydance starts it knows you already have a license but it is not valid for the new version, it will come up with the Demo banner and you will have the opportunity to enter your new key.
You cannot enter the new license until you install the new version.

Thanks dwg - I feared that was what you were going to say. So it's close your eyes and hope that the new key is valid. I added my key into the Test on https://infinitekind.com/update and it said it's ok, so fingers crossed. I'd have preferred to be able to enter it first but hey ho! .. Thanks for the advice.

Rich, you can always re-install MD 2023 and use your old 2022-2023 license so it isn't quite as dire as you describe. The updates have usually gone smoothly and I have installed dozens of preview updates with almost never a reason to go back.
In looking at the issues (especially the crash for details on equities with splits) I am hoping to see if build 5119 is a bit more stable before closing my eyes and hoping. If there are problems, it won't be if the new key is valid or not! Even so you have the ability to make 100 manual entries before the demo mode stops more. Automatic and downloaded entries are not counted against that number.

Ok - I bit the bullet. Downloaded 5118 - opened it - got the message to enter license. Enter the 2024 license and hey presto.. all good. Thanks for all the help everyone.

Thanks for the information dwg.
I initially had the same issue you described. I was eventually presented with an in app
option to purchase the 2024 upgrade at a discount.
I purchased and installed the 2024 upgrade and activated the app using the new license key emailed to me after the upgrade purchase.
MoneyDance 2024 indicated the product is activated and no longer in demo mode.
After closing and reopening MoneyDance 2024, I return to Demo mode status and unregistered status. Any ideas on how I can solve this problem?
17 Posted by dtd on 03 May, 2024 10:12 PM
I assume it now again says unregistered in the Moneydance/About area. Enter the 2024 license code again, and do the same thing (close and open) - is it unregistered again? If so, something isn't Sticking (i.e. the license code)
Respond as to what happens here.

The license is stored in a file called config.dict. If it is not being saved it suggests there may be a problem with this file.
I suggest as a test renaming this file. Moneydance will start as if it is a new install so you have to find your data file, enter the license, install extensions etc but you can see if it then remembers the key, if it does you have a bad config.dict file. This file is not worth trying to fix by hand.
This is where to start in any case.

@dtd: Yes, I've closed and re-entered the upgrade license multiple times with the same results: Unregistered Trial version. Really odd problem.
@dwg: Thanks for the suggestion. I will try that solution and reply back with results.
Thanks both!

@dwg: For reference, I am using a Windows 11 machine. I've searched for the "config.dict" file, but cannot find one installed anywhere within the app installation folder, or anywhere on my primary OS and APP drive (C). I've also made sure the search for hidden files.
Any further advice for me?
Thanks

Config.dict is your personal Moneydance configuration file so it is in the .moneydance folder under your login folder.
So it should be c:\Users\YourUserName\.moneydance\config.dict

@dwg: Thank you, much appreciated. Your recommended remediation steps solved the problem.
thanks!
