Upgrading

I got a message that there was an upgrade, so I installed it, but now when I open Moneydance it says I am in "demo" mode

That implies that your last paid version or upgrade was 2022 or earlier. You will need a new key. Please take a moment to read https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb/purchasing-and-upgrading/upgrading

I'm a fellow user.
As a general rule Moneydance licenses are valid for the version your purchased plus they provide for a free upgrade to the next major release. So for a free upgrade to Moneydance 2024 you should have purchased a Moneydance 2023 license.
If you upgrade past your license entitlements Moneydance switches back to demo mode. If this happens you can go back to the version you had or purchase a discounted upgrade.
From you post we cannot say what version you had, or what else may have happened that could have caused this.

Thanks everyone for your help. I had a 2022 version, so it did not allow the recent 2024 upgrade. I went ahead and purchased it.
