Editing Similar Payees

From time to time, the list of similar payees that pops up contains odd transactions that had a special character to them. If I have entered several different transactions to the same payee with different categories, the list of similar payees will sometimes include the one that I want to use and sometimes will not. It seems, at times, like one certain payee transaction, that was a one time thing, continues to pop up. I can confirm it, but then I have to go in and change it. I am thinking. wouldn't it be nice if there was a similar payee editing ability where we could see the payee transactions that are being linked to by the "similar payee" function. Then we could choose the two or three transactions that should typically pop up. Maybe there could be a check box next to each one. Perhaps we could also uncheck a box to keep one that typically pops up but isn't typically useful from making the list. It is a small thing I guess, but I would find it useful i am sure on a weekly basis. I am constantly using this feature with all my credit card imports.

I believe these lists are generated at run time based on transaction that are in the register i.e. they are not stored lists, if this is the case there would be nothing that your could edit

Similar payees is such a potentially helpful resource. It can be a real time saver. Except that very often the list is not relevant at all. What a shame! The coding that makes this happen must rely on very old data.
A simple fix might be to simply allow a user to delete one or more of the similar payees so that newer ones can populate. We don't even need to edit, just delete. When I make a new payee, it doesn't come up because apparently older ones have taken up the limited number of choices. Hopefully this deleting ability wouldn't take too much coding. This change would make life easier for many of us users.

The only way to change the payees that appear is to change the entries in the register in the description field.

There is no stored list to delete items from what you see is run time generated from the entries in the description field in the register.

So how are these payees generated? Some of them come from months or years before. How would you find them to change them?

Realistically, the only thing significant to the choice of a payee is the category. The list generates payees from the same company. The payee list will give me as many as 10 potential payee choices from the same company. That is helpful. The problem is the lack of payee/category choices. This issue is the one that complicates the process, not the name of the business. It would be great if the payees list could show various historical categories. Some payees with older categories don’t show up. You get many of the same categories and not a variety. If you shop at a large store like Target or Walmart, they sell so many different items that if you want to track clothing, or groceries, you want to detail the category. You sometimes have multiple categories in a split transaction. These historical categories of a single payee are recorded in the register, the problem is that the list doesn’t give you a variety of categories that have been made in transactions historically. I often get a list of 10 where 5 of the list have the same category but it is not the one that I want to use.

That makes me wonder how the payees are chosen. Is it recent ones, or ones that have been repeated many times? Wouldn’t it be more useful to generate a list with as many different categories from the same payee so that the user has a broader choice of payee transactions to choose from?
    Thanks for your response.

Have you thought of adding something to the description to provide a better indication rather than using something as generic as "Walmart".

That’s a thought, but when these payees import from credit cards they don’t come with anything but Walmart, just the name of what ever company.  I would have to type in the payee line more details to get it to recognize what I had added before.  That is not saving me time.  Similar payees is supposed to save me the extra time of typing more.
Why not add a line of code that wouldn’t let the program pick identical payees with the same category. Then you would get a list of payees with each having different categories to choose from. At least there would be more variety. I’m sure other users would appreciate this. You have the best financial program on the market. You are always improving it. Why not add this small change to save us a bit of time?

    +1 from me.

Most folk buy software in order to simplify processes, not complicate them!! ;-)

That is exactly right. This one simple change would save people time. The similar payee list could be streamlined and improved for user time savings. So right.
