Reports and direction for starting over with losing everything
Hello Infinite Kind,
I spent most of the morning trying to figure out my sync issue with another computer. I still haven't got it working but in the process of trying to figure out what my most up-to-date or latest file is I've noted a few things as I've tried to make reports so I can go back and rebuild my whole account if needed. It's been rather frustrating.
I'm trying to generate a simple report for tax purposes that lets me brake down all my expenses by Category. I've looked through literally every report and can't find one that will do that in a simple way. I need this report because we are missionaries and have to show expenses related to our Home costs; everything from gas for the lawnmower to taxes. I've tracked this using the Category HOME with all these as subcategories. Is there an easy way to generate a report showing YTD costs broken down by the categories?
Secondly, this whole thing started when I was traveling and my laptop was not properly syncing. It's referring to the same file on/in Dropbox and it pulls up all the entries but I have to match them even though they have been matched and cleared on my other machine. We won't even begin to address the way it works on my phone.
I love MD but I'm hoping someone can tell me an easy way to export my "up-to-date" file so I can literally start over but have a back up to refer to. Or at least tell me how to generate a simple report for my costs YTD to have for tax purposes up to today as I will loose all that information if I completely remove an reinstall MD.
I've tried exporting / backing up and found I have more than one file, but can't tell which one is my original. I realize I created the problem when first learning to use MD because I created more than one file.
Thanks for your advice,
Dan

just a user,
I think the "Transaction Filter" report will provide the report you need.
(there are some know issues related to cleared status, but it shouldn't affect your need)
Just select the date, Last Year, Year to date, etc, and select "subtotal" by "category"
Also include a check in the "include Sub-Accounts" box
You probably want to limit the report to just a single category or parent category. You can do that by checking the "Account/Category" and selecting the category as needed.

just a user,
You probably don't need to reload MD, and if you do, I think you'll still have the same issue because its the "data set" your dealing with not the MD program itself.
Related to the dropbox sync, I would suggest opening the various data sets you have on your primary PC and finding the one that has the best information. Then check to make sure you have it set to dropbox sync. Then on the secondary PC, click file, new, open, and open synced file, dropbox connection. Respond to the security stuff and then be sure to select the DropBox data set that you found to be the best on your primary PC. Then you should be good, except for any transactions you may have created on the other data sets. That will take a bit of work to open those old data sets and find any transactions that you may need to transfer to the good data set. You can use the export and import features to move to the good data set depending on the quantity . May be safer and easier to just manually re-enter a small quantity. Which also reminds me to recommend you to export a backup copy once you find your good data set. Sometimes you can make an error on importing data which you may want to scrub and go back to a known good copy.

I realized this is a continuation of a thread started while I was traveling. Sorry about not realizing how to continue with the first one.
I fear I've messed up the Sync Settings now. I have my MD file set up with my most recent downloads and it sync'd with my phone. However, in the process of getting here I started a "new" file and got the information from the Dropbox Connection using the main PC that set up the original Sync to Dropbox. Now I can't change the Sync Settings at all. See the attachment. I did some research and it's similar to another users issue. I'm guessing because I pulled the information from the Dropbox file it does not realize it is the "master" file and therefore it won't let me update anything.
Jenny at Infinite Kind solved this by writing a python script that reset this for that user. I tried the script but it didn't change it for me. See this link: http://help.infinitekind.com/discussions/general-questions/39212-cant-sync-my-moneywell-account-with-dropbox-between-two-computers
If I can get this sync to allow me to change it I'm going to try to follow previous directions and get it working so each of the computers uses the most up-to-date file from Dropbox.
