investment account suggestions
Would like to offer product improvement suggestions for Moneydance particularly as related to investment accounts.
1) Reconcile of an investment account to its cash balance is not very useful as often cash is swept to a fund leaving reconcile to zero cash which becomes meaningless. Would like to be able to "reconcile" share quantity against statements.. This could be an indication of total share quantity for the security highlighted on the register (at the date highlighted, not last date); or could be a display of share quantities of each security held at the end of a reconcile period.
2) When acquiring data using OFX protocol it would be desirable for Moneydance to enter category information for long term and short term capital gains, not just call everything dividends.
3) An ability to adjust share quantity (and/or share price and cash balance) by a small amount would help. Sometimes an error is so small that its not worth struggling with reconcile, but because share quantity is nonzero the security is displayed as owned when it is no longer so.
4) Last is a bit OCD and may not be controllable by Moneydance, but on OFX update when there is a dividend followed by purchase of additional shares it would be nice if the dividend came first and the purchase second in the register.
Thank you

I'm a fellow user.
The OFX specification has no provision for Category information, so there is nothing in the downloaded date to give an indication.
You can Create categories for Short Term Capital Gains and Long term capital gains and assign as appropriate.
Within Moneydance you should not consider an Action type of "Div" as just meaning dividends it really should be taken to mean any regular investment return received and the category you assign determines what it is.

I think I have confused “actions” with categories. My intent was to add actions beyond “div” and “divreinvest”. Similar for suggestion about being able to adjust holdings - create new action. Sorry.

Some of the extra actions that Quicken has forces what category to be used.
I'm not sure this is necessarily a good thing to do because in different countries there are different requirements. For example where I am Capital gains have 4 different categories.

An action I would like to see is "transfer shares" between accounts without a sell, and corresponding buy.
A share count reconcile function that works within a single page (either register or security detail) would be welcome though.

A little more register ordering accuracy for transactions done on the same date would also be nice. Maybe using the transaction time stamp or a move up/down user function that would stick between any register re-ordering date sort.

I’m really loving Moneydance on Mac, iPad and iPhones. One needed addition is to have investment accounts show on the mobile versions. Unless I’m mistaken, I don’t think that’s happening in the current versions. Am I right or just not aware of a way to do that, or maybe it’s already in the works?

You are not mistaken, the current version of the mobile app does not support investment accounts.
The history of the mobile app, explains why. The app was originally devised in times of earlier smartphones, smaller less functional, limited screen space. The intention of the app was limited to providing a way of simply entering transaction data on the go hence the inclusion of only Credit Card and Bank accounts.
There has been talk about a full version of Moneydance for tablets, I doubt if that is trivial as I do not think there is complete Java support for the OS that many of these devices use.

Thank you dwg! I thought that was the case but wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing anything. I can certainly see the challenge of porting over everything MD does to fit into IOS devices. Great tool regardless. Thanks again.

My Investment vendor allow OFX downloads and within the ofx file are Price for the day. You system does not seem to use that information to update prices only the transactions. It would be great if the file is an OFX grab the information and update the investment prices. I invest in Bonds only so I wrote a python script that extracts in a qif format price updates that I apply to my investment accounts and it works very well as long as the ticker symbol is the bond cusip number which mine are. If I had a stock unit I could see what is there in the ofx file but as I said i only invest in bonds. The stock extension does not support bonds so I wrote my own. But you should add this feature into your system. I have attached my python script for those who may need it and for your developers to review and see if you can add this feature in to your next release. If the data is there in the OFX file use it if you can.
