Transaction Filter: Categories
I do not see a way of defining the Transaction Filter to filter on categories.
It seems 'Tags' are the next-best thing and allow for multiple selections. Since I have not spent any effort defining Tags in any of my transactions I will now have to define a bunch.
Is there any effort in the works to allow for transaction filtering on 'Categories'?
I see the 'Find and Replace' extension allows for finding on category so that's a good alternative - but I really like how the the Report mechanism (Transaction Filter included) is integrated. And the 'F&R' doesn't have the ability to "pin" a filter onto the main panel like the Reports mechanism (or I don't see it).
The ability to memorize a report and have it "one click away" in the main panel is ideal - and I'd use that for a filter on categories if available.
Thanks.

I'm a fellow user.
Categories are fundamentally Income and Expense Items.
The reports to use when you wish to report on categories are the two Income and Expense reports, which one, depends on the level of detail required. The detailed report list all transactions that satisfy the selected criteria, the summary report gives totals only.
Both reports allow you to select one or more categories to report on.

Thanks for the info.
I did figure out how to filter transactions on categories by filtering on 'Account' and selecting the category of interest. (Can only select one category.)
My error - I did not think of categories as accounts but it works.
I can then save ("Memorize") the filter and can now have one-click access to the category total (for the period).

Glad to hear it sounds like you have found a solution that works for you. I'd also recommend you try to above suggestion of the Income and Expense reports. This may display the data in a more useful way, and it allows selecting multiple categories.
