Please can you update the android app? It has not been touched since 2017.

I do not have a Dropbox account since they made you pay to have it on more than one device. Like many I use a different cloud service (in my case, OneDrive) and would like it to work using that.
There are times when I am not near my computer that I would have found it very useful to be able to search my transactions.

    Hi Jim,
Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.

Generally, Dropbox has a limit of 3 devices, however this should not be a factor even if you had a fourth device. The limit applies to the devices that can be connected to the Dropbox product itself, via official Dropbox applications, such as the official Dropbox desktop client or mobile applications.
So, if your computer was using Dropbox Folder for instance, as you have to have Dropbox client installed this count towards the limit. However, if you use Dropbox Connection and don’t have Dropbox client installed this does not count towards the limit. This limit does not apply to third party apps that connect to Dropbox via the Dropbox API such as the Moneydance Mobile app. So, you would only be in danger of moving towards the limit if you had Dropbox official app installed on your mobile devices for another reason.

Finally, I would recommend doing two things instead:
    1) setting your automatic backup folder (in the Backups tab of the Moneydance preferences window) to a folder that is synced with Dropbox, and
    2) Enabling syncing using the File->Syncing menu in Moneydance, even if you aren't syncing between computers or mobile devices. Doing those two things will give you historical in-the-cloud backups, as well as an additional incrementally-synced copy of your data. Both copies of your data will be fully encrypted and are not at risk of getting corrupted.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

I gave up on Dropbox because I had been using it on 3 computers, a tablet and a phone. I'd built up a good storage ability via recommendations. They prevented me from continuing use when I changed my phone. I refuse to pay them or go back to using them.

Syncing with another computer is not a problem. I do that already using OneDrive.

The underlying issue is that the android app is FIVE YEARS OLD! In app age, that is prehistoric.

    Hi Jim

    To add to Maddy’s post.
I am using the free Dropbox account to sync.
I have 4 laptops, three of which use the sync method Dropbox Folder so that my 3 devices used on my three Drobox account. I also sync 2 Android phones and a forth laptop which uses the sync method Dropbox Connection and none of which count towards the device limit on my free Dropbox account provided you don’t install Dropbox client on them.

On my newer Android phone I am running the Android beta build which has a better screen layout and some small feature adds. As a first step in adding more feature the phone now stores all moneydance data, not just the data related to accounts. No time frame on when the new features this makes possible will be added has been given.
To install the beta as far as I know you must be running at least Android 7.1.1.
Uninstall your current Moneydance mobile app (if installed) then to install:
    1. Use the Play Store app to find Moneydance.
    2. Click on the Moneydance icon to show the description of Moneydance.
    3. Scroll to the very bottom of the description and you should see
    Join the beta
    Try new features before they’re
    officially released and give your
    feedback to the developer.
    Join Learn more
    4. Click on Join and in the window that appears click JOIN.
    5. The screen now reads
    Joining beta...
    Adding your account to the
Program. It may take a few minutes.
    6. Wait 60 seconds, then use the back key and click on the Moneydance icon again.
    7. The heading should now read Moneydance (Beta). Assuming it does click Install. If it does not go back to step 6.
    8. Once installed, start Moneydance app.
    9. The initial sync may take some time and the balances listed on the account page may be all zeros. Close the App and also the its background instance and then open the app again, balances should be OK from then on.
The reason the initial sync takes a long time is unlike the current version the beta is syncing all Moneydance data as a prelude to expanding the mobile apps functions in a later build.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you Derek for your interest and explanations.

I was already signed up for the beta, but I've never seen the actual app. My phone runs android 11 and I submitted the feedback to developers in the play store about the inability to use it with other clouds in August last year without any response. So I have eventually posted here.

It is the restriction on using Dropbox that is preventing me. As I said, they caused problems and I cannot forgive them. I was warned that before I could add my new phone I had to remove TWO devices. It meant a complete change in what I had been doing for many years within the family. At the time it was cheaper to buy a Microsoft 365 subscription than to buy the same amount of cloud storage from Dropbox. It also gave huge benefits with its own apps. But I had to spend quite some time setting up all the synchronisation on all our devices.

Since moving across I've never had the issue of getting a conflicted version of a file that Dropbox occasionally created when one computer hadn't fully synced at the time.

My moneydance is already using sync via OneDrive between computers. I'd have to change that too. I also have a second cloud backup with my ISP. I don't want to mess around with a third.

Perhaps I'm cutting off my nose to spite my face, but against the underlying 2.8* review, the requirement of using Dropbox seems just too restrictive.

    Jim.

    Hi Jim

There is no free Dropbox account restriction, limit to the number of Moneydance devices that can be sync, as I have explained.

The Moneydance mobile app uses a Dropbox provided API (Application Program Interface) that is also used by the main Moneydance program when syncing is set to Dropbox Connection. As far as I know OneDrive does not offer developers a similar API that could be embedded in the Moneydance Software. That why Dropbox is so attractive to developer like Moneydance. Also, Dropbox supports Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android the same systems supported by Moneydance, so it’s a good fit. Again, the same can’t be said for OneDrive or most other cloud server services. Using the Dropbox API means there are no restriction on the number of devices that can be synced using a free Dropbox account.

    Hi Derek

All I can tell you is that a few years ago, Dropbox most definitely introduced a limit on the number of devices that could sync in a free account.

A quick search in Google confirms this fact.

"08/05/2019 · Dropbox has updated its website recently to allow users on their free storage plan to now only connect up to three devices (laptops, tablets or phones) to their account at one time.

    Hi Jim

Yes I was using Moneydance and syncing between 2 computers and one phone at the time Dropbox introduced the three device limit on the free Account. What you missed is that the limit only applies if you are using official Dropbox apps.

    To repeat:
The limit of 3 devices running Dropbox applications with a free account applies to the devices that can be connected to a Dropbox product itself, via official Dropbox applications, such as the official Dropbox desktop client or mobile applications.

If your computers are using Dropbox Folder as a syncing method for Moneydance then as you have to have Dropbox Client installed, this count towards the limit. However, if you use Dropbox Connection and don’t have Dropbox Client installed, this does not count towards the limit. This limit does not apply to third party apps that connect to Dropbox via the Dropbox API. This includes the Dropbox Application Program Interface that is embedded in Moneydance mobile. Your mobile devices would only count towards the limit if you had Dropbox official app installed as well on your mobile devices for another reason.

    Hope that clear.

Since the limit was imposed I have added 2 more computers and one phone so I now have 6 devices:
3 computers using Dropbox Folder which need Dropbox Client installed using up my 3 device limits.
1 computer using Dropbox Connection that does not have Dropbox client installed and thus does not count towards the limit.
2 Phones which inherently use Drobox Connection with no Dropbox apps installed and thus do not count towards the limit.

    Hope this helps

    Hi Jim

Looking back at the notes I made at the time I found this link which may be the Dropbox 3 device limit document you are referring to.
    https://help.dropbox.com/accounts-billing/settings-sign-in/computer...

However, in answer to a user’s question Dropbox clarified what counts towards the 3 device limit.
    https://help.dropbox.com/account/computer-limit

and this certainly applies to Moneydance when used in the way I have described.

    Hope this helps

    Thank you Derek

When I started digging, I found that I've still got a Dropbox account, untouched for 3 years. When I changed the sync in MoneyDance from cloud to DropboxConnection it still had the link set up from when I had tried the old 2017 MD app on Android, and found it so lacking that I gave up.
I've 11 devices showing as linked to my Dropbox account. Mine and my wife's. Several of those I no longer have. Some of them are duplicates that logged in from somewhere else. Looks like I have some housekeeping to do, as I thought I had closed the account.

I've now synced the new MD beta app, and opened it up. I will have a look at how it has changed. Initial thoughts are a significant improvement.

Then to change the sync to my travelling laptop.

    Hi Jim

Glad you are heading in the right direction.
On your computers use up the three Device limit installing Dropbox Client so you can use sync method Dropbox Folder. For any further computers use Dropbox Connection with out Dropbox Client installed. Dropbox Folder Is faster than Dropbox Connection. Remember make sure your phone don't have any Dropbox apps installed, just the Moneydance app which does not count towards the account limit.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Derek
New phone and laptop so neither has Dropbox at all.
The secondary laptop I have been syncing using OneDrive. It looks as if I have to forget that and create a new set of accounts on that by the new sync through Dropbox. Have I got that right?
There is no issue of speed; I don't use both together.

    Hi Jim

If you want to sync to a phone you must sync using Dropbox you cant use OneDrive, they want mix. All devices must use Dropbox. Just make sure on your computers no more than 3 computer use the sync method Drobox Folder. On additional computers use Dropbox Connection without Dropbox client installed. On the phone don't install Dropbox.

    Hope this helps
