Hello,

When editing categories, it would be nice if there was a search box to filter. I have switched to Moneydance, and after importing from another app, there are some duplicate categories that overlap the built-in ones. Being able to search, I could filter similar names and then edit, move them around, or merge.

    Hi,
Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.

Using the Find and Replace extension - available under Extensions->Manage Extensions - you'll set the search fields in the 'Find' panel on the left. Then choose 'Find'. This will display a number of transactions at the bottom of the window.

Once you've picked the settings you need, choose 'Replace' or 'Replace All' at the bottom of the panel on the right.
If you're happy with the changes press 'Record', then 'Done'.

However, if you are talking about duplicate transactions, that is a different matter.
In this case, you may need to go through the confirmation process.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

    Hello Maddy,

I am referring to the dialog for listing all categories. I am aware of how to batch change categories for individual transactions. What I would like to do is when viewing the list of categories, filter them so I can find similar ones and change as needed.

I double checked this and in fact, there's an existing ticket in our ticketing system with your suggestion, so I've attached it to this discussion and the developers will be looking into it.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance!

@agastya - I just knocked up an extension which clones the MD Menu Tools/Categories window and adds a Quick Search filter field at the bottom of the screen.. It seems to work well (for me). It's (re)using the actual MD code and just adds a filter so I can't see any problems with using this.

    You can download from here:
    https://github.com/yogi1967/MoneydancePythonScripts/raw/master/categories_super_window.zip

With MD open, unzip the file and then double-click categories_super_window.mxt to install. You will get a popup signing warning and a red banner on the Home Screen. You can accept the warning and then click Ignore on the Home Screen.

To run, MD Menu>Extensions>Categories Super Window...

Let me know if you use it, and if you get any problems, or have any suggestions?
