I recently realized that a few other types of transaction/balances, similar to what is available in the RATIOS extension (if you have seen it), would be nice to have for selection in Custom Balances, e.g. ending, starting, average and difference between ending and beginning, balance. Ending, for instance, lets you estimate a RMD for an IRA account.

avp2tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494972572022-03-07T20:57:37Z2022-03-07T20:57:37ZAdd a Reminder/s Floating Window

😓

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494972572022-03-07T21:41:16Z2022-03-07T21:41:16ZAdd a Reminder/s Floating Window

avp2 - are you speaking about categories, or accounts?

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494972572022-03-07T22:20:07Z2022-03-07T22:20:07ZAdd a Reminder/s Floating Window

After reading, I see I was a bit unclear.
Stuart (at my behest) set up filters for categories (as with my 35 years of data, not doing so renders category custom balances useless). For accounts, the term is balances - so those are always current date.

In both cases, there are internal code bits to allow for both of these. For categories - there are internal designations for time periods. For accounts, well, current balance (or future balance, or cleared balance) are also built in.

To add other items and other time periods for categories would be a programming task, as well as going beyond the built in balances for accounts.

I THINK (Stuart tries to please) that if you want any of what you are asking for, you'd probably want to be extremely specific on what you would like to use, AND how you would use it (as you mentioned, RMDs and those specifics would help.) AND how other people could use it as well (i.e. not just for you).

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494972572022-03-08T00:47:12Z2022-03-08T00:47:12ZAdd a Reminder/s Floating Window

Thanks for the info. I thought the filters that are in the Ratios extension meant they were standard items already being kept by MD so listed those. The ones that I am actually using in Ratios and could better be put Custom Balances are average, ending and transactions in-to an account/category. I use the in-to filter for showing IRA contributions year to date.I use the average filter for showing income and expense year to date. As stated earlier, I use the ending balace filter for showing required minimum distributions for current year. Seems to me these would be useful for many others, but I have no idea on what the programing effort to get them might be.

avp2tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494972572022-03-08T00:55:57Z2022-03-08T00:56:20ZAdd a Reminder/s Floating Window

Having not seen the Ratios extension, I can't speak to whether they are builtin to MD or not.
IRA contributions year to date - I literally have that already, just with the category "IRA Contribution" with the filter "This Year"

Doesn't sound like IRA - but I also have a balance: Schedule C Income vs expense, with income being Sched C income, and most of my Sched C expenses included

As for ending balance filter, I'm not 70 yet, but I do have "Social Security received" which might match your RMD bit (unless it's a required amount minus what is already done - that might be an interesting bit - a fixed amount offset by the amount)

If anything, I'm trying to discuss what is there vs. what you'd like to see and trying to distinguish the differences in the Ratios terminology vs custom balances.

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494972572022-03-28T12:03:09Z2022-03-28T12:03:09ZAdd a Reminder/s Floating Window

@avp2 - I have just updated Custom Balances. Very interesting Stu. Always wanted something of the sort - although I am keen to see more functionality and thus would like to suggest the following:

01/
Double-clicking takes you to EDIT the particular reminder. But pressing the ESC key does not get you out. You have to click the cancel button. Please enable the ESC key.

02/
I had the option to double-click and to enter the transaction ( not edit the reminder ).

03/
We had an option to search the list. I have an extensive list that - with no search functionality - that is now driving me all cross eyed. Would be great to have my account entry screen visible - while being able to search through the reminders and to pick the one I want to enter. The ability to search and change the account to apply would be absolutely brilliant ( a feature that was requested many times over ) but perhaps that is more moneydance driven.

04/
This is taking it further - but perhaps add right-click menu options ? Example, right click on a reminder and select (right-click-menu-item) REPORT - to get a report of all related transaction and for user-defined number of days.

RJrontag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494972572022-04-04T17:13:54Z2022-04-04T17:13:54ZAdd a Reminder/s Floating Window

@roneydxb..
1/ Sorry. This is calling the standard MD edit reminders window.. I have no control over this. I have asked Sean many times to allow escape to close windows.... Up against a brick wall on that one (unless we get loads of people requesting too).

2/ Sorry, I do not understand what you are asking for?

3/ Search the list = YES (I agree)... But sorry, I have no idea what the rest of your sentence means? 'Would be great to have my account entry screen visible - while being able to search through the reminders and to pick the one I want to enter. The ability to search and change the account to apply would be absolutely brilliant ( a feature that was requested many times over ) but perhaps that is more moneydance driven.'...? Pls explain?

Ref #2.
Apologies, my edits didnt work as expected.
I would prefer if - by double-clicking on a reminder, it would take you to the appropriate reminder-entry-transaction screen.

In moneydance, reminders are listed in the dashboard ( when enabled). When I click on them, it permits posting that particular transaction. But in your app, a double-click edits the reminder. Instead, it would be preferable to have a reminder-posting-screen.

Ref # 3
apologies again.
Please add a search option in your software.

In moneydance, when posting a reminder-transaction, there is no visibility of the account. Your software provides this feature. The ability to search/find and post a transaction will be sweet.

Installed from that link. The warnings are good - the red bar on Monedance is good to have. I have tried on live data and then uninstalled. My findings:

Search is good/awesome!

I felt a lag ( but not sure if that was my system

I use the ESC key a lot - and that closes the window. Is that normal ? Perhaps an option to manual press the X ( close) button ( instead of the ESC key ? )

Did not notice the search bar initially. I feel placement on top would be more ideal.

Great work.

RJrontag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494972572022-04-05T14:53:27Z2022-04-05T14:53:27ZAdd a Reminder/s Floating Window

@StuartBeesly: Ref. ability to search and change account. Sorry - I think I spoke too much as that is (perhaps) more moneydance related ( a change I've asked for earlier ). Perhaps if I explain steps in detail - it would be more clear.

In the moneydance dashboard ( with reminders enabled ):
- Click on a reminder - and transaction-POSTING-screen appears. That window title shows as 'reminder notification' ( sounds incorrect perhaps ) - Just below the window title is the account selection - the displayed a/c is captured at the time of creating the reminder. - Clicking on that account selection permits you to change the account. But when you have a multitude of accounts that contain several bank accounts / financiers / credit cards / debit cards / deposits / other asset accounts / loan accounts both personal and others, over 12 years of building all sort of accounts in moneydance ( the darn thing even lists some categories ) ( and all setup as branches for clarity on the dashboard and also on the left-side-pane ), then finding the right account will pop your eyes straight out. Instead, the ability to have a similar search filed ( as you have implemented ) would have been best practice - I've submitted these and more suggestions - but nothing yet :(

PS. You can imagine how long my left-side-window looks - and no search options there - and no grouping ability either.

These are all perhaps moneydance related items that need developments - but I just threw those notes in there.

RJrontag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494972572022-04-05T17:15:25Z2022-04-05T17:15:25ZAdd a Reminder/s Floating Window

@roneydxb - OK, I have made some significant changes to list_future_reminders...
@StuartBeesley: Installed, tested - and working perfectly fine. I even changed the account on a reminder (in moneydance) and the change almost immediately got updated to your app.

It works so well that I would highly recommend others to use. Please try and get this approved asap. Infact, consdering delays from Moneydance, I would like to suggest that this app be somehow incorporated into Moneydance such that:

This app ( including the search/filter abilities etc ) replace the current moneydance reminder screen on the dashboard - but also have ability to view as a floating window visible in the accounts/ pages.

The search/filter is so sweet - I'd really wish that was available in all other areas of the dashboard ( bank accounts / credit cards / assets / liabilities ) - and also on the left most window/pane that is always visible.

SUGGESTED CHANGES:
* You need to do something about the ESC key. Too often, I had to reload because I pressed the ESC key. In this instance, to close the screen, manually clicking the 'x' close button is preferred.Oddly, once I click into the search/filter filed - then ESC will not jump out of search and will not close the app either. * The account column is good to have - but it would be even better if we had the option to switch it on/off as needed. The reason I say this is because of screen space being occupied. Moneydance itself has a problem with screen space management - and this app will require even more space. Nevertheless, this app is a absolute delight to have. * Ability to switch any columns on/off as needed.

MORE COMPLICATED CHANGES TO (perhaps) CONSIDER:
* Opening the app should ideally resize moneydance so that the app attaches itself (initially ) to the left or right hand side of moneydance - so they are both visible ( unless manually moved by the user ) * Resizing the window should try and keep the date and amount column visible ( take note of large numbers especially ).

RJrontag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494972572022-04-06T06:25:42Z2022-04-06T06:25:42ZAdd a Reminder/s Floating Window

Ref ‘You need to do something about the ESC key. Too often, I had to reload because I pressed the ESC key.’. Please clarify. Earlier on you didn’t want escape in somewhere, and now I think you are saying you do?

Ref ‘ Oddly, once I click into the search/filter filed - then ESC will not jump out of search and will not close the app either. ’. Please try to reproduce. If it ever happens again, can you go and grab console and send me that. It probably means something’s crashed.

Ref ‘ The account column is good to have - but it would be even better if we had the option to switch it on/off as needed’. Just manually shrink the column. The extension remembers the column sizes. Please confirm this works for you?

Ref ‘ Opening the app should ideally resize moneydance so that the app attaches itself (initially ) to the left or right hand side of moneydance - so they are both visible ( unless manually moved by the user )’. Sorry, can’t do / won’t do.. Too complicated (perhaps if this was my job 😉).

Ref ‘ Resizing the window should try and keep the date and amount column visible ( take note of large numbers especially ).’. At the moment you have total control of column widths and these are saved/reloaded. Auto resizing is off to allow this. So for now, this is also a no… sorry.

Please confirm each point above? Thanks.

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494972572022-04-06T06:27:52Z2022-04-06T06:27:52ZAdd a Reminder/s Floating Window

PS. Try my categories-super-window extension from here:

Enables search. Let me know what you think?

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494972572022-04-06T06:54:36Z2022-04-06T06:54:36ZAdd a Reminder/s Floating Window

@StuartBeesley: Responses in the same order as listed:

01:
Ref. ESC key.
In moneydance, clicking a reminder takes you to the posting screen - where the ESC key does not work. This is not good. ESC key should get you out of this posting screen. But this is a moneydance issue as you responded in that earlier post.

In your app, (when focus/cursor is not in the search/filter field ) the ESC key closes the entire app. How does that feel ? If in moneydance, I press ESC and it shuts moneydance down without giving me a chance to say no - thats how it feels. It shouldnt do this. ESCaping from an entry screen is good to have - but ESC closing the entire app is a bit ... duh ( or so I feel )

02:
Oddly, once I click etc.
Actually, I think this works fine. Nothing crashing. Filter works fine. Pressing ESC clears anything typed into the field - but focus remains in that field. Now that I think about it, it actually makes sense. I was hoping that a second press of the ESC key would throw focus out of the search/filter and back to the list - so i could continue using the keyboard arrow keys to go up/down the list. Nothing much to worry about here.. just trying to get better UI.

03:
Ref the account colum is good to have....
Yes - I now notice that the extension remembers the column sizes. Good - thanks. Resizing from the right blinds the amount column.. but that is fine. Based on extension remembering column size - this should work fine.

04:
Ref. opening app should ideally resize moneydance...
hehe.. agree. if only all wishes come true.. :-)

05:
Same as above. Not to worry.

One more:
Ability to add/remove columns. This is again .. wishful thinking - but having moneydance, this app and perhaps an excel sheet on one screen - is becoming midly 'worrysome' :-)

RJrontag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494972572022-04-06T06:56:10Z2022-04-06T06:56:10ZAdd a Reminder/s Floating Window

Will work on the categories-super-window in a while and post back.
I am inclined to suggest/request - please build a similar app as follows. Will be useful for people who have numerous accounts etc. Details would be:

An app / window with a search/filter field ( to searches through all accounts )

Show/Lists all the accounts ( bank accounts, Credit cards, assets, liabillities, investment accounts ) - along with branches/sub-accounts with indents, groups etc. Expandable & collapsable by user. Basically an exact replica of account items on the dashboard - to be used with above search/filter.

search and double-click on resulting item would open the account in moneydance.

I'd like to ( one way or the other ) have this app permanently visible with moneydance.

Ideally, the should have ability to replace the left-hand-side-static moneydance-window/pane in its entirety ( would need to add BUDGET and GRAPHS groups also - but permit headers and parent/sub-accounts to be expandable/collapsible). If this is possible, then a seperate window (like future-reminders ) is not needed -- as this would be visible at all times. If this happens, trust me - users will grasp this with both hands !

If not possible to replace the left-hand-side static window/pane, then yes, we need to have a seperate floating window like future-reminders. It would be useful to add this to the dashboard/summary-page also.

Awesome. I usually create accounts and categories in some sort of sequence combining different items.. but over the years.. they might have gone haywire a bit. Thus far, including them into sub-groups was my only option to manage with some sanity.

This search feature - is a revelation to what is hidden in the list. Easy to search and find - delete or alter items as needed.

Prefer the search bar at the top ( probably because that is where it is mostly found I suppose ). Search at the bottom would also work - no big deal

A 4070 preview coming thru as well.. nice.. although.. will be keen to see previews become stable releases much faster. The moneydance download file should reflect version and preview/stable etc.. but thats another matter I guess.

Back to your development. That is great news. Will surely get into it asap.

You asked what the future reminders dont do. Future reminders only lists 'future REMINDERS'.

What is needed is:
- a listing of all accounts along with main group headers ( accounts / cards / assets etc ) and also expandable/ collapsable parent and sub-groups of each account - display their balances ( balance / current balance etc ). - include a search/filter - .. and here is the key: double clicking ( or pressing enter ) on an account should jump/open moneydance to that account page - make them all keyboard friendly for the enthusiasts on a keyboard and mouse-independent ( mouse slows things down )

Understandably, these are not part of future reminders. I dont know how many moneydance users are out there and spanning how many years.. but anyone remotely close to me (12+ years ) would be handicapped without these. That is why it is needed as part of moneydance itself ( and the left side pane ) - but your seperate window app is alternate medicine that works for sure.

should I add more ?

Someone even suggested ( to moneydance ) a user-created group-header which I think is a very good idea but needs more thought on how to apply.

I had suggested ( to moneydance ) a FAVOURITES group option on the left pane - such that few accounts could be re-isted here also. Wud be nice

Just re-installed the latest to test. If I may list initial difficulties I found:

1/ There is no option to expand/collapse multiple items at the same time. Perhaps add the option to select groups and expand/collapse them all in one go ( right click menu or other alternative )

2/ Search still does not find items when their parent groups are collapsed. When the list is massive - it is often important to collapse groups and to have visibility of the parent groups only.

3/ Double click opens the account-edit window. Instead, I feel it would be good if a docuble-click would take the user straight into the particular moneydance account window itself ( not a new window ) - and a right click menu provide option to edit the account ( a bit like the LIST FUTURE REMINDERS ).

PS.
