Automatically Merge vs Merge
My version is not up to date so if this suggestion is obsolete, please disregard.
There are 2 functions in MD. One called Merge and another called Automatically Merge.
Merge turns 2 identical transactions into 1, eliminating 1 because it's redundant. We see this come up when Confirming downloaded transactions. If I've manually entered a transaction and then download that same transaction, 2 will come up. MD can see this because they have the same, I don't know, date and amount? Whatever it is it's a good feature to easily combine the two.
Then we have something called Automatically Merge under Preferences->Networking. This is to turn on automatic categorizing. This is where my suggestion comes in. Since there is already a function called Merge and I think Auto.Merge is a poor way of describing auto.categorizing I say, change the name of auto.merge. Quicken used Memorize. (I think. It was also able to Memorize splits as percentages. Very handy with transactions needing tax split off to a different Category.)
Maybe Automatically Categorize would be a better name for Automatically Merge.

I'm not sure you are correct.. There is Merge which tries to work out the best merge candidates and then auto-merge simply tells MD to apply the best detected merge...
Sometimes when downloading, MD detects corrections or duplicates already in your register and will eliminate these / apply / merge the change....

I can be off track on this one. I must have mis-read this:
https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/discussions/general-questions/2732-automatically-merge-downloaded-transactions
Can I set Auto-Categorize based on data such as the memo entry?
And, can I auto-split based on percentage?

That is a 10 year old and incorrect thread. Auto merge does work and can be enabled in preferences. It’s either on or off.
As for auto-categorise. It learns what you have categorised before and works out the best categorisation. The more you confirm, the more it learns.
No to auto split by %

Stuart
Thank you for all your help in this matter.
I'd like to set some "rules" for auto-categorization because when I transfer funds among accounts the Description is all the same ("Withdrawl") but in Memo it shows the account number. If I could set a Rule that based on XXX account number in Memo, it would select the right account in Category.
I've been using MD for about 2 years now. I'm doing a bunch of year end stuff with it these days and I sure like it. And I'm glad I'm not using that other *ntuit product.
Cheers
Mark

I have long desired a "Manual Merge" capability, select two or more transactions and merge them. The is often required when auto-merge doesn't happen because of discrepancy between a reminder and a download, but it would be useful in other situations as well. The ability to "collect" multiple transactions into a split transaction is very similar and also desireable.
