"When Starting"
Several times I have wanted to switch from having the last file open automatically to choosing each time MD opens. I always have the same problem - I can't remember where to change that option. The answer is on the "Welcome to Moneydance" screen
To me, it would be more logical for this option ("When Starting") to be a "Preference" rather than on the "Welcome to Moneydance" screen.

FYI - it is actually a preference, but does not show in the Preferences screen. You can find it in the config.dict file under the key: 'startup_action'
The key should be set to 'recent' or 'welcome'.
If it's missing, then it defaults to 'recent' anyway.
The file being opened is in the key 'current_accountbook'.
Only modify this file with MD closed (as otherwise you will lose changes made).
