You know what would be nice, if you could hide categories you have used in a year, like QuickBooks, and also it would be nice if you could merge categories

Hi,
Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.
Although you cannot "hide" categories as such, you could navigate to Moneydance --> Preferences --> Network and set the option "Only match downloaded transactions when they are at most 'N' days apart". Change the N to 0. This should help limit future merges.
As for a method to merge categories you could follow the steps below:
First, you should take a backup of your data file by going to File -> Export Backup.
There's no way to undo the changes you are about to make beside restoring from a backup file.
Then you should navigate to Tools -> Categories from the menu bar.
From the Categories window, right-click on the category you want to move transactions out of, and choose to open it in a new window.
The window that appears should contain all the transactions for this category, with the associated accounts in the category field of the register. This is because you are viewing the 'other side' of these transactions from the perspective of the category, something you will rarely do in Moneydance.
Press CMD-A to select all of the transactions in the category, right click on the selection, go to Batch Change -> Account from the popup, and select the category that you want to move these transactions to. Your register should now be empty. Close this window of your category register.
Go back to Tools -> Categories, right click on the category you moved these transactions to, open it in a new window, and verify that all of your transactions have moved successfully. If so, close this window, and back to the Categories window. You should now be able to delete the old and now empty category.
Repeat these steps for as many categories you want to merge.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

Thank You, about the merging part, but it would really be nice if you could hide them, maybe in the future.

Actually I've noticed that there's an existing ticket in our ticketing system with your suggestion, so I've attached it to this discussion and the developers will be looking into it.
Please let us know if we can be of further assistance!

You can merge like this.. Backup first. Install and run the find/replace extension. Then carefully move all txns from one category into another... Then delete the resulting empty category.
