How to enter a deposit or withdrawal in the investment acct. register. The security box wants some thing inputted or else it pick something.

I'm a fellow user.
Transactions like Income, expense, buy, sell, Dividend and their related actions require a security because these actions should involve a security.
To move funds in or out of the investment account to say a bank account use the Xfr action. You can also enter such transactions using the Bank register.

I apologise. Ithought XFR would require a destination or sourse but it works fine.

I'm glad to hear it sounds like you've figured it out. All transactions in Moneydance need to have a category or second account associated with them, following the basic principles of double entry bookkeeping. Even if the money is coming from an individual, one would want to give that transaction an income category, so the program can track where those funds come from in various reports.
