Modal Dialog Windows in MD Should Be Showing on the Windows Taskbar and Alerting - But Do Not
The first one is the login window that is displayed after double-clicking the MD icon on the desktop. On my machine (which is somewhat ancient), it can take a while for Java and MD to start up. Due to this I sometimes click on another Window/program (email/browser) to do something else while waiting. When this is case, the login window for MD ends up hidden from view and it does not even show in the taskbar - not to mention is not flashed as an alert (as many other Windows programs do).
Another case is the error window shown when there is a problem downloading transactions. Again, downloading transactions via the Menu->Online->Download All Accounts can take a while to complete. So I often try to accomplish other tasks while it is running. But if an error is encountered, that error window ends up hidden from view and it does not show up on the taskbar - nor does it flash an alert. Especially in the case of an error, this really should happen.
I don't know offhand if this behavior is a limitation of Java on Windows or not. I know Java isn't "native" and so perhaps some capabilities found in other programs cannot be used in MD. But if it can, it really should be.
Cheers

Hi David,
Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.
Which version and build of Moneydance are you using?
To check, open Moneydance and select Help --> About Moneydance

2022.5, not that it matters. MD has done this for many years/versions since I converted to it from Quicken.

Please navigate to Extensions->Manage Extensions and install the Toolbox.
Launch Toolbox and navigate to Toolbox Options (on top left corner) and select -
Update Mode->Yes->Do Back Up Now (recommended) Finally choose Menu: General Tools. Update Functions-> Reset Window Display Settings and restart Moneydance!
Please keep us posted on your progress, Thank you!

I do not believe this issue has an relationship to the Windows being rendered off screen that Toolbox fixes in this instance.
This particular problem manifests itself if you say are opening a password protected data set switch away from Moneydance then switch back to it. What happens in that case is that you see the main Moneydance window but the password window is buried somewhere in the background i.e. behind the Moneydance window and perhaps behind other windows - but it still in the area of the screen display.

I agree pretty much with dwg, Maddy. My only disagreement is that the main MD window is NOT anywhere on the screen. The password entry window appears to be modal (ie, nothing proceeds until it is addressed) - as it should be. The problem is that it can be hidden and there is no sign of it on the taskbar. Other programs, for example keepass.info show their password dialog and it not only shows in the taskbar but it also flashes the taskbar icon until the user addresses the dialog in order to make it clear that there is a modal window waiting for user input. Obviously, this is not the end of the world. But it would be great if MD made the window harder to loose.

Hi whitedavidp,
Agreed 100%.
If you suspect that one of MD's modal windows has been obscured, key-combo ATL-TAB should reveal it.

yep kevin, alt-tab helps. but only if you are expecting the window not seen. i notice the same sort of thing with the download error window - which i generally do NOT expect. it too is modal + requires the users attention. but it is easily hidden. That is actually what caused me to post now.

Seems like the developers might find some help doing this here:
