I've seen other posts confirming that this is not currently possible.

I would just like to be able to create parent-child relationships with accounts so that I can group things together and make reading/seeing the multiple investment accounts that my wife and I have a little easier.

I already do this with various bank accounts and such.

Thanks for considering!

P.S. Its been a while since I've seen any version updates; anything coming soon? :-)

I am not support, just a user.
    Hi gbonawitz

Sean the Moneydance software developer is rewriting Moneydance. Basically the entire data model layer is being converted to a different language. The rewrite will make it possible not only to support Windows, Mac and Linux from the same base but Android and iOS mobile, opening up the possibility to extend mobile features. He is also taking the opportunity to remove the need for Rosetta were currently needed on Mac and fix issues created by Mac new release Sonoma. The rewrite for Windows, Mac and Linux looks like its nearing completion but it’s been a long road. The Alpha preview (the one before preview) started at 5008 and its now currently up to 5045. The last issues still remaining seem to be with Mac. So hopefully there will be a new preview build soon.

    Hope this helps.

The parent/child relationship is already in use in Investment accounts which is why the capability is not available.

When you associate a security with an investment account a child account is created for that security, you see the result in the little mini register on the Securities details screen. So things like buy and sell transactions the other side of those transactions are in the security's sub account.

I'm sure you have seen references to double entry accounting in the forums, this is how it can be achieved in Investment accounts with these transaction types. Double entry really just means that every transaction is a transfer between two accounts (and accounts includes categories).

    Hi dwg.

Thanks for the reply. Even if it weren't ~ account-based, I do think it'd be useful to be able to have groupings of accounts. Even if you didn't create a "parent account" in my example the ability to have.. call it a header or something... that would total the children underneath shouldn't be too difficult.

    Just my two cents.
