Upcoming transactions
It's extremely important when trying to keep ahead of expenses to see upcoming transactions in the specific account or register that they will occur. Otherwise we're very much in the dark as far as if there's money in that account to cover expenses, or in the case of deposits, that there will be money there to cover the expense. The summary/reminder page DOES NOT PROVIDE FOR THIS.
The other problem I have is that I've approved modifications when making them, there's often some that the system hasn't completed or saved in the process that should have been. So I've gotten accounts reconciled and then when I leave that register it thinks there's some remaining unsaved changes which will often mess up all the work I think I've completed. Perhaps the people making and selling this product don't use it to know it's problems?

Custom Balances extension can probably help you with balances including future reminders. Latest here:

Take a look at the Foresight items listed under the Tools menu. You can place a graphical display of the Forecast on the Summary Page. Do so in Preferences.
I can't speak to your second issue as it has never happened to me before.
